First Session

The first session of the 44th Parliament began on the 22nd of November 2021, MP Anthony Rota was re-elected as speaker. Six other MPs ran including veteran MP and leader of the Green party Elizabeth May[1]

Governor General Mary Simon delivered her first speech from the throne which she delivered speaking in French, English, and Inuktitut[2]. The speech focused on reconciliation and climate change; it also highlighted the governments progress on child care, fallout from the COVID 19 Pandemic, and reducing child poverty. The speech suggested that in the coming session the government would be focusing on climate change, continued reconciliation with indigenous peoples, criminal justice reform, hate and racism, reforms to the broadcasting act, and Indo-Pacific partnerships.[3]

Following dissent from the Bloc and Conservatives the house considered and passed a motion on continuing hybrid sittings into the new session.

Working on a campaign promise to introduce or re-introduce at least eight bills in their first 100 days[4] the Liberals quickly introduced [5]
