Kliptown Empyrean

In the meantime, we have ‘Kliptown Empyrean’ to tie us over, and it’s a brilliant track. With the essence of that signature Skrillex sound we all have come to know and love, it gives us that hyped up, choppy type of sound that’s been missing from our lives for a bit now, and we’re happy to see it return.[2]
Along with the track is a new cover art visual, depicting his logo on the beach[2]
in March 2020, Skrillex, who mysteriously wiped his Instagram earlier this summer, had remained tight-lipped on any further details until now.[3]

It's a chilled out garage track akin to "Fire Away,"[3]
Filled with soft and delicate synths and melodies, it still features a lot of hallmark Skrillex effects in its drum patterns, vocal modulations, and more. It bears a lot of resemblance to the vibe we got on “Would You Ever?” with Poo Bear all those years ago.[4]
Skrillex shared a photo to Twitter showing him using Ableton's "share on Soundcloud" feature[5]
The single takes elements from a mix of genres including ambient, UK garage, and future garage, landing as a hybrid with refreshing atmospheres.[6]
“Kilptown Empyrean” notably also pairs unique signatures from the past and present, sampling Lizzie McGuire in addition to 808’s from The Prodigy‘s “Breathe.”[6]
“Kliptown Empyrean” is Skrillex’s first full solo release in nearly half a decade. [6]
Kliptown is a suburb of Soweto in Gauteng, South Africa, located about 10 miles southwest of Johannesburg. In 2016, Skrillex and local rapper Riky Rick visited the Soweto Kliptown Youth Centre to hold a Bridges for Music workshop where both offered advice on how to operate in the industry and also discussed how belief in oneself, hard work and determination are necessary to achieve one’s dreams. The term “empyrean” by definition refers to “heaven,” and would not be a misnomer for the Soweto Kliptown Youth Centre, which serves as a safe haven for African youth, housing 40 kids and feeding more than 200 children a day from the community.[6]
Not even one full day after Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites 10th birthday, Skrillex has shared new music, offering a free full download of what is as close to a full-fledged solo release as he’s gotten this year,[6][2][7]

Kliptown Empyrean is Skrillex’s first solo song since 2019’s Show Tracks[8][4]
It's been a relatively quiet few years for Skrillex. While the producer released a series of collaborative singles in 2019 -- including the Boys Noize and Ty Dolla $ign collab "Midnight Hour," which earned them all a Grammy nomination for best dance recording[12]
Composed of a pitched up and chopped up vocal sample mixed in over spare, skittering percussion, the song is the first release of what looks to be a significant new project from the producer born Sonny Moore.[12]
