Evaluate an article
Complete your article evaluation below. Here are the key aspects to consider: Lead sectionA good lead section defines the topic and provides a concise overview. A reader who just wants to identify the topic can read the first sentence. A reader who wants a very brief overview of the most important things about it can read the first paragraph. A reader who wants a quick overview can read the whole lead section.
ContentA good Wikipedia article should cover all the important aspects of a topic, without putting too much weight on one part while neglecting another.
Tone and BalanceWikipedia articles should be written from a neutral point of view; if there are substantial differences of interpretation or controversies among published, reliable sources, those views should be described as fairly as possible.
Sources and ReferencesA Wikipedia article should be based on the best sources available for the topic at hand. When possible, this means academic and peer-reviewed publications or scholarly books.
Organization and writing qualityThe writing should be clear and professional, the content should be organized sensibly into sections.
Images and Media
Talk page discussionThe article's talk page — and any discussions among other Wikipedia editors that have been taking place there — can be a useful window into the state of an article, and might help you focus on important aspects that you didn't think of.
Overall impressions
Examples of good feedbackA good article evaluation can take a number of forms. The most essential things are to clearly identify the biggest shortcomings, and provide specific guidance on how the article can be improved. |
Which article are you evaluating?
[edit]Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?
[edit]I chose to evaluate this article because of its relevance to the course I'm studying, the History of Asian Americans. The Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907 was an informal agreement between the U.S. and Japan, but it still served as a significant example of U.S. Asian immigration diplomacy. Japan, being a prideful and powerful national entity had to agree to the somewhat humiliating terms of stopping Japanese migration to the U.S. to prevent further discrimination of its people in America. This event indicates both the severity of the discrimination against Japanese immigrants in the U.S. and the extent to which U.S. was perceived as a global powerhouse.
Evaluate the article
[edit]The lead section concisely and accurately covers the key details of the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907, clearly addressing the main points of the agreement and mentioning the most pressing context--that being the Pacific Coast race riots of 1907. The article's content is relevant to the subject matter, and introduces concepts such as the Japanese Empire's national power through notable example, like the Russo-Japanese war. The tone of the article is neutral and both the language and overall structure of the writing is coherent. The only image present in the article doesn't have a clear relevance to the content material--additional commentary on the picture could be helpful. Overall, the article summarizes necessary background information, such as the social and legal restrictions imposed on Japanese immigrants and the status and intentions of the Japanese Empire and the U.S. government which served as the backdrop for the agreement. It also clearly describes the tangible results of the agreement in the "federal intervention" section. Because of this, the article seems complete and well-developed.
