Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

[edit]

I chose to evaluate this article because of its relevance to the course I'm studying, the History of Asian Americans. The Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907 was an informal agreement between the U.S. and Japan, but it still served as a significant example of U.S. Asian immigration diplomacy. Japan, being a prideful and powerful national entity had to agree to the somewhat humiliating terms of stopping Japanese migration to the U.S. to prevent further discrimination of its people in America. This event indicates both the severity of the discrimination against Japanese immigrants in the U.S. and the extent to which U.S. was perceived as a global powerhouse.

Evaluate the article

[edit]

The lead section concisely and accurately covers the key details of the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907, clearly addressing the main points of the agreement and mentioning the most pressing context--that being the Pacific Coast race riots of 1907. The article's content is relevant to the subject matter, and introduces concepts such as the Japanese Empire's national power through notable example, like the Russo-Japanese war. The tone of the article is neutral and both the language and overall structure of the writing is coherent. The only image present in the article doesn't have a clear relevance to the content material--additional commentary on the picture could be helpful. Overall, the article summarizes necessary background information, such as the social and legal restrictions imposed on Japanese immigrants and the status and intentions of the Japanese Empire and the U.S. government which served as the backdrop for the agreement. It also clearly describes the tangible results of the agreement in the "federal intervention" section. Because of this, the article seems complete and well-developed.
