The Demak Civil War was a war of succession between the sultan of Demak and other claimants who wanted to usurp the throne of Demak. The death of Sultan Trenggana in 1546 left an interregnum in Demak, Arya Penangsang, who was the son of the assassinated Sekar Seda Lepen (Raden Kikin), Trenggana's own brother, challenged the sovereignty of Trenggana's son, Sunan Prawoto, the war severely damaged the kingdom and left Demak in decline. After the civil war ended, the throne was occupied by Trenggana's son-in-law, Joko Tingkir, who crowned himself as Sultan Hadiwijaya and moved the capital from Demak to Pajang, thus ending the rule of Demak Sultanate.
