The INSEAD Social Innovation Centre is an inclusive platform for cross-disciplinary research and engagement in the area of social innovation. It was founded in 2007 by Luk N. Van Wassenhove who holds the Henry Ford Chair of Manufacturing at INSEAD. In line with the context of a business school, the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre defines 'social innovation' in the following way: "Social innovation is the introduction of new business models and market-based mechanisms that deliver sustainable economic, environmental and social prosperity"[1]

Research[edit]

The INSEAD Social Innovation Centre brings together and enhances the academic expertise of a diverse group of leading INSEAD research teams. While some focus on challenges and opportunities for mainstream business, others concentrate on the application of business concepts for tackling global issues like climate change and poverty. There are five different research groups working under the umbrella of the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre:

Education[edit]

Being at the centre of a business school, the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre creates unique courses and projects for INSEAD's MBA, Executive MBA, PhD and Executive Education programmes in order to prepare globally-minded and responsible leaders and entrepreneurs. MBA students can choose from a portfolio of ‘social impact’ electives and have extensive opportunities to get engaged in the issues through one of the high-profile student clubs. The INSEAD EMBA now offers a unique opportunity to the issues through a Key Management Challenge in social innovation. At present, the Social Innovation Centre offers the following courses in Executive Education:

  • INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Programme (ISEP): Effective leadership skills and frameworks to grow social entrepreneurship organisations
  • Management in the Humanitarian Sector Programme (MHS): Essential management skills for a vital sector
  • European Health Leadership Program (EHLP) and Middle East Health Leadership Program (MEHLP): Better understanding of the strategic, organisational, technological and operational views in healthcare management

They also run several company-specific Executive Education courses in the areas of social innovation, covering topics like corporate social responsibility, ethics and compliance.[3]

Outreach[edit]

Meaningful relationships with companies, NGOs, fellow research institutions and INSEAD's MBA students and alumni provide the foundations of a diverse and open community through which the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre makes a real impact.

Current Activities include:

  • Sustainability Executive Roundtable: Bringing together experts, alumni and other professionals to explore a variety of issues and opportunities in social innovation.
  • MBA International Development Field Projects: A four-month MBA elective gives students the opportunity to do a hands-on field project for a client organisation whose work benefits economically under-privileged groups.
  • Pepal Programme: Pepal is a new initiative that in collaboration with the INSEAD Social Innovation Centre, allows a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the private and non-profit sectors.
  • UN Global Compact’s Principles for Responsible Management Education: Original signatory and active supporter of the six principles that aim to "inspire and champion responsible management education, research and thought leadership globally."[4]
