Vinous[edit]

Vinous is an online, modern-day wine publication founded in 2013 by wine critic Antonio Galloni.[1] Vinous brings together traditional reviews and ratings of new releases, along with retrospectives and verticals of older vintages and pairs it with modern interactive maps, restaurant reviews, onsite videos with producers, and a variety of events.[2] It is also the first major wine publication designed and built to be be online led.[3]

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

Vinous launched in 2013 after Galloni left Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate. At launch, Vinous included all of Galloni's reviews from The Piedmont Report and The Wine Advocate.[3]

IWC Acquisition[edit]

In December 2014, Vinous acquired Stephen Tanzer's widely acclaimed International Wine Cellar, which included a library of over 145,00 tasting notes.[4] Former IWC reviewers Stephen Tanzer, Josh Raynolds, and Ian D'Agata are now part of the Vinous team.[5]

Delectable and Banquet Acquisition[edit]

In December 2016 Vinous acquired the wine app Delectable, which is used to scan wine (beer and spirits) labels, and write and share tasting notes.[6] Delectable has been downloaded over a million times and has a reputation for being particularly popular among the wine community.[7] Vinous wine reviews and ratings are made available on Delectable to Delectable Premium subscribers, which includes certain subscribers to Vinous who linked their accounts with Delectable.[8] Banquet is the arm of Delectable that serves as an online platform for wine.[9]

Features[edit]

In addition to publishing traditional reviews and ratings of wines from throughout the world, Vinous maintains a vintage chart, glossary and grape guide. Interactive features include maps of Barbaresco and Barolo and a forum for subscribers.[10] Vinous hosts events several times a year, most to raise money for charity.

Napa Valley Maps[edit]

In May of 2016 Vinous unveiled Napa Valley maps as its latest feature. The first ever of their kind, the comprehensive maps of the vineyards of Napa Valley were created in collaboration with Alessandro Masnaghetti, internationally renowned cartographer and author of comprehensive maps and books of Barolo, Barbaresco, and other regions.[11] Many of the top wineries in Napa maintain extreme privacy, which is why maps of this kind were never made before. Galloni, Masnaghetti and the Vinous team worked for years to convince wineries that this was a worthwhile project, and then conducted extensive research on the ground.[12]

The maps come in various sizes and formats.[13]
