DDR-Oberliga[edit]

After returning to the internationally used fall-spring schedule, the Oberliga started on 18 August 1962, while the last match was played on 12 May 1963. SC Aufbau once more suffered from great inconsistency in their results, producing upsets one week and slumping to trashing defeats the next. This led to the Berliner Zeitung calling the side the "fickle sphinx of our top league".[3] In the end, the side avoided relegation on the strength of a last day away victory at Erfurt - but a top-half finish would have been possible, had Magdeburg not been docked three points for violations against Jena and Halle.

FDGB-Pokal[edit]

FDGB-Pokal review[edit]

In the FDGB-Pokal, all Oberliga sides joined at the third round only, as had been practiced last season. Magdeburg faced Oberliga side Empor Rostock. A nil-all draw after extra time in Rostock meant a replay in Magdeburg. This time Rostock won 2–1 in extra time, and Magdeburg were once again eliminated.
