Zináparo is an municipality of the state of Michoacán, Mexico. [1]
Political entity[edit]
Located in the north part of Michoacán, in the Bajío region. It is located 1,840 meters above sea level. It borders, north with La Piedad, Numarán, Penjamillo and Churintzio. It's surface is 113.38 km². Is the municipal head, located at 145 kms from the state capital. In 1995 the population was of 2,465 habitants. The municipal hall is constituted by: one municipal president, four councils of relative majority and three councils of proportional representation. Their main economic activities are agriculture, trade and pottery. [1]
Geography and environment[edit]
Its relief is constituted mainly by the transversal volcanic system and the Purépero hills. There are no important streams, only small springs. It has an average altitude of 1840 meters (1,480 ft) above sea level.The climate is template with temperatures that range between 14º and 30º degrees C. It is relatively dry, with rains in the summer. Annual average rainfall is 900.0 mm.
The ecosystem is dominated by nopales, prairie, pastureland and mixed forest with pine and oak trees. Typical fauna includes species such as coyotes, ducks, turtledove, squirrels and weasel.[1]
History[edit]
It is a Chichimeca origin name "obsidian place" even though another translation refers to "medics place". It was a prehispanic population and it was first recognized by the spanish government in 1613, it was known by the name of San Juan. In 1822 Zináparo was a congregation of carriers and agriculturists. In 1863, it stop being considered a tenantry and was made a municipality, being added to La Piedad district. Later, in 1894, its category of municipality was deleted according to the Territorial Law issued that year. Later on, in 1903, it was recognized by Michoacán's government as a municipality once again.[1]
