1832 to 1868[edit]

The Reform Act 1832 established seven contiguous parliamentary boroughs matching the built-up area of London—usually termed The Metropolis—as it existed at the time. The boroughs were associated with four different counties and were collectively known as the 'metropolitan boroughs'. The constituencies were:

1868 to 1885[edit]

The Reform Act 1867 divided Tower Hamlets to create a new parliamentary borough of Hackney and expanded the contiguous metropolitan boroughs to the west, creating a new parliamentary borough of Chelsea. The metropolitan boroughs covered an area that was smaller than that for the Metropolitan Board of Works that was established in 1855. The constituencies were:

1885 to 1918[edit]

The Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 created parliamentary boroughs covering the whole of the Metropolitan Board of Works area, extending the area of parliamentary representation. In 1889 that area became the County of London. In 1900 there was an adjustment to the civil boundaries of the County of London that caused some constituencies to be partly in other counties.

The constituencies were all within the County of London, using the civil boundaries that were adjusted in 1900.

1955 to 1974[edit]

In 1965 the County of London became the Inner London area of Greater London. The Outer London area remained divided between the parliamentary counties of Essex, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Hertfordshire until constituencies were revised.
