Camp Glenorchy, or Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat, is an accommodation provider that operates in Glenorchy, New Zealand. Camp Glenorchy is designed, built, engineered and operated in line with the philosophy and principles of the Living Building ChallengeTM, the world’s most stringent sustainability standard for buildings. This standard requires buildings to be designed and constructed to function as elegantly and efficiently as a flower, with seven “petals”: place, water, energy, health and happiness, materials, beauty, and equity.[1]
Camp Glenorchy is a subsidiary of The Headwaters, a company that operates brands in the tourism, accommodation and retail industry in Glenorchy, New Zealand. All profits from Camp Glenorchy would go to the Glenorchy Community Trust, directed by community leaders to support initiatives which enhance the liveability and vibrancy of the town[2].
History
[edit]Paul Brainerd and Debbi Brainerd are a couple from the United States. They have been visiting New Zealand for about 20 years and have owned a house in Glenorchy for 10 years. In 2014, they saw the old Glenorchy Campground for sale and could sense a huge potential in the site. They purchased the old Glenorchy Camping Ground in the same year [3]. In March 2018, 4 years later, they have launched Camp Glenorchy - which they hope will become New Zealand's first net zero energy use visitor accommodation and the southern hemisphere's most sustainable[4].
