The character was born onscreen on July 6, 1977 (later revised to 1971, when he as SORASed to a teenager during the mid-1980s), the child of longtime ATWT characters Barbara Ryan and James Stenbeck. The character was most notably portrayed by Andrew Kavovit (1986-1991, 1992), who won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actor in the role. John Howard played the role in 1996. Scott Holroyd was cast in the role in 2001 and played the character until his departure in 2003. Actor Roger Howarth portrayed Paul from July 7, 2003, until the series finale on September 17, 2010.

Casting and conception[edit]

The role of Paul Ryan was originated by former Who's the Boss? actor Danny Pintauro, who joined the cast in January 1983 and departed a year later in February 1984. Pinaturo was replaced by actor Eldin Ratliss in the same month; Ratliss remained in the role until he was replaced in January 1985. He was replaced in the next month by actor C. B. Barnes. Barnes remained in the role until January 1986 when he was replaced by actor Damon Scheller; Scheller exited the role eight months later in October 1986. Actor Andy Kavovit was hired into the role and remained with the series until October 1991. Kavovit reprised the role of Paul Ryan for a short time in 1992.

Actor John Howard claimed the role of Paul four years later in the spring of 1996, however, he later exited in October of that year. Actor Scott Holroyd took the role over in July 2001 after a five year absence from the series. In March 2003, Holroyd announced his decision to vacate the role.[1] On his exit, Holroyd revealed, "It was amicable decision, and I'm going to miss the people, but I'm excited to see what's next for me in my career."[1] In April 2003, it was announced that actor Roger Howarth, best known for his portrayal as Todd Manning on the ABC Daytime soap opera One Life to Live in the role of Paul Ryan.[2] Howarth made his debut as Paul Ryan on July 7, 2013.[3]

Howarth remained with the series until its finale in September 2010, making him the longest actor to portray the role, in a total of seven years. Following World Turns' finale, Howarth made his long-awaited return to the role of Todd on One Life to Live.[4][5] Following the series finale of One Life, Howarth crossed over to the last remaining ABC soap, General Hospital as Todd Manning.[6][7]

In 2013, Howarth departed GH in the role of Todd, due to the pending resurrection of One Life under its new production company, Prospect Park. As part of his deal, Howarth reprised the role of Todd on the online revival for its first season. In May 2013, Howarth returned to GH, this time portraying the character of Franco, previously portrayed by actor James Franco.
