Andrew Dunlop (born Helensburgh) is a British Conservative politician, lobbyist,[1] public relations consultant and since February 2012 the chief adviser on Scottish affairs to David Cameron, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.[2]

He is a Horsham district councillor[3] for the Cowfold, Shermanbury and West Grinstead ward[4]

Education[edit]

Andrew Dunlop was born in Helensburgh, schooled in Glasgow and studied politics and economics at Edinburgh University under former Labour MP for Berwick and East Lothian and leading proponent of devolution, Professor JP MacIntosh.

Political career[edit]

Dunlop's first political job was as Head of Research for the Scottish Conservative Party from 1981 - 1984. He then joined the Conservative Research Department where he successively had the Trade and Industry brief and then was appointed Head of the Political Section.

Dunlop was a special adviser to then Defence Secretary George Younger in the Thatcher Government.

Andrew Dunlop worked at No10 under Margaret Thatcher.[5]

He covered a range of policy areas during his stint in the No 10 Policy Unit including Scotland (a key policy development was the establishment of Scottish Enterprise), Defence Procurement and employment and training policy.

2012-present: Scottish advisory role to the Prime Minister[edit]

As special adviser to David Cameron, he will play a key role in devising the Government’s response to the SNP Scottish Governmanet's independence campaign and will lead the strategy to defeat Scottish independence.[6]

Andrew Dunlop still has family connections to Scotland and is a regular visitor north of the Border, where he keeps up to date with Holyrood politics.[7]

PR career[edit]

After leaving 10 Downing Street in 1991, Andrew Dunlop became the managing director of top lobbying firm [[Politics International], where he advised a range of corporate clients including Virgin, Airbus owner EADS and SAB Miller.

Personal life[edit]

He lives in exclusive commuter village of Jolesfield Partridge Green (on the edge of the South Downs National Park), in Horsham, West Sussex, England with his wife Lucia, 52, and three daughters.

Atlantic Bridge[edit]

Andrew Dunlop was a trustee of the discredited The Atlantic Bridge educational "charity" set up by former defence secretary Liam Fox and run by Fox's friend Adam Werritty.
