Ariel Pey-Shiuan Tsai (simplified Chinese: 蔡佩轩; traditional Chinese: 蔡佩軒; pinyin: Cài Pèixuān, born January 23, 1995) is a Taiwanese-Canadian singer-songwriter.

Early life and education

[edit]

Tsai was born in Taipei, Taiwan, and is the older of two children. She has a younger brother, Kelvin. She moved to Canada with her family when she was three, moved back to Taiwan at 9 and returned to Richmond, Canada at 10. At the age of 5, she learned to play the piano and taught herself to write songs around then. At the age of 14, she wrote her first complete song, "Every Time I Think Of You".

Tsai studied in the University of British Columbia, in which she majored in pharmacy, was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta and co-founded Big Brothers at UBC.[1] She graduated from UBC in 2018.

Career

[edit]

Tsai started uploading videos of herself singing in April 2015, and received nearly 10,000 views within a day. She was then invited by Meipai to start a channel as an artist. Her second video attracted over 715,000 views. In October 2015, she was invited by the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations to compose the theme song for their annual singing contest, and appeared as a special guest during its finale.[1]

Since 2016, Tsai has been uploading livestreaming on her Facebook page, in which she showcased her singing and piano playing skills by covering popular songs during each broadcast. Each livestream episode had an average of 100 to 200 thousand views.

In 2017, Tsai received greater attention when her cover of Kim's "Nini" received more than 1.8 million views on YouTube within two weeks. Her covers of other popular songs on YouTube, such as Jay Chou's "Love Confession" and Namewee's "Stranger in the North" had similarly went viral.[2][3] On September 26, 2017, she released her first single, "You Said You Love Me", the first single off her debut EP, "遇見Ariel". Her second single off the EP, "The Vow", was released on October 24. The EP was released at the end of November 2017.[4]

On February 23, 2018, Tsai released "Because We Loved", which was used to promote Bowie Lau's movie "Jue Zhan Qian Wang". On March 14, she released her single, "Waiting For You". Her single, "To Youth", was released on May 8. In August 2018, Tsai moved back to Taiwan in order to focus on her music career, and held a concert at Legacy Taipei on August 19.

Tsai continued to release more original singles through the course of 2018-2019, including "Blessings", "Every Time I Think Of You" and "Starry Night". On March 2, 2019, she headlined the first Marina Bay Sands' Open Stage of 2019 in Singapore.[5]
