From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles McKnight (~1720–January 1, 1788) was a Presbyterian minister in the Province of New Jersey in colonial America. A ardent supporter of the American Revolution, he was the father of Charles McKnight, a physician in the Continental Army, and Richard McKnight, a captain in the Continental Army. McKnight was one of the original trustees of the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University.

McKnight was born sometime around 1720 in the north of Ireland. His father was a Presbyterian clergyman. The younger McKnight emigrated to the colonies around 1740, and was ordained as a minister on October 12, 1742 by the Presbytery of New Brunswick. He became minister of the combined congregations of Cranbury Township and Allentown on October 14, 1744.[1]
