Michael Noack (born 9 November 1955 in Berlin-Charlottenburg) is a German dentist. He is a professor at the Center of Dental and Oral Medicine as well as the managing director of the polyclinic of Dental Care and Periodontology at the University of Cologne. His particular scientific interest lies in the minimal-invasive caries treatment and the preventive dentistry.

Biography[edit]

Noack began to study dentistry at the Free University of Berlin in 1977. During his studies he acted as a tutor at the department of biochemistry and molecular biology at the Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin). After he received his license to practice dental medicine in 1982, he was working as a scientific staff member in the field of tooth preservation and periodontology at the Free University of Berlin as well as at the division of tooth preservation of the polyclinics North at the FU Berlin. In 1986, Noack earned his doctorate and started to work as senior physician and academic assistant at the FU Berlin until 1994. When he finished his habilitation in 1994, he received the authorization to lecture at the FU Berlin and one year later at the Humboldt University of Berlin. From 1993 to 2010 Noack was an editor-in-chief of the dental journal Die Quintessenz. In 1996, he followed the call of the University of Cologne and became the Dean of the Centre of Dental and Oral Medicine at the University of Cologne where he had stayed until 2011. Currenty, Noack is acting as a professor and director of the polyclinic of Dental Care and Periodontology at the university-hospital of Cologne.[1] Besides, he is working as scientific consultant in companies like Colgate, Johnson & Johnson, Dentsply and Philips. Since 2006 he is a member of the ethics committee of the medical department at the University of Cologne.

Scientific contribution[edit]

In his scientific work Noack aims to adjust dental required interventions more towards patients and in particular to make them less painfully. At the beginning of his scientific research work in Berlin, the focus hereby was on amalgam replacement material and tooth-coloured restorations. Beside the development of anterior tooth composites, Noack published first basic scientific papers about adhesively bonded tooth-coloured inlays, in particular also by the use of ultrasound [2][3] When he came to the University of Cologne, his research topics became more medically oriented and focused more on cariology. During this time, he carried out several studies about caries diagnosis, therapy decision and doctor-patient-communication including shared decision-making.[4] In his current clinical studies Noack is addressing the prevention of dental and oral diseases as well as evidence based dentistry.[5][6] Noack research works had led to an implementation in daily clinical practice in medical care as well as in teaching. In particular since 1998 the center in Cologne has been performing the careful minimal-invasive excavation. The OSCE-test-format and the several peer-teaching-methods have been embedded in the curriculum since 2006. Noack's concept to the new construction of the dental clinic according to medical didactic principles was realized by the funds from the economic package II. The new construction, which was scientifically guided, has been operated since 2011.[7] Noack's commitment to a patient-based dentistry can be seen in over 350 scientific presentations worldwide.[8]

Awards[edit]

Due to his activities as an expert, conference leader and editor-in-chief of the dentist journal Die Quintessenz,[9] Noack was awarded the medal of honour by the German Society for Dental and Oral Medicine in 2013.

Memberships in scientific organisations[edit]

Noack is a member in the following scientific organisations: International Association for Dental Research, German Society for Dental and Oral Medicine,[10], German Society for Tooth Preservation, German Society for Paradontology, University Teachers Associations of ZMK and the German Network for Evidence-based Medicine.[11]
