Laka (The Laka Foundation) is an international network (including organizations, companies and individual experts) focused on social impact via design and architecture. The foundation develops such programs as the Laka Competition, Laka Perspectives, and Design that Educates Awards.
Laka Competition[edit]
The Laka Competition is an annual international architectural competition held by the Laka Foundation.[1] The competition has been created in order to search for innovative ideas of architecture that reacts in a way that is related to its social, environmental, technological, construction or material aspect. In addition to the activity of the competition, the participants are provided with a blog platform that presents potential inspiration related to the topic of architecture reacting to human needs.[2]
The main inspiration for the competition is living organisms which respond and adapt to external stimuli. Laka Competition draws inspiration from the responsiveness of nature and looks for designs that are capable of dynamic adjustments, providing safety and comfort for their inhabitants.
Apart from the money prize offered as an award for the winners, in the next editions of the competition selected participants can be considered to be included in the Laka Accelerator for an additional prize of having their project financially and substantially supported in order to play a role in covering human needs as the "architecture that reacts".
2015 edition[edit]
The first edition, run in 2015, gathered over 100 submissions and nearly 200 participants from 5 continents and 30 countries. Three winners and 10 honorable mentions were awarded to the participants. The first prize was received by Calvin Fung for "Fluid Architecture" researched with Victor Huynh (Canada). The jury in the 2015 edition consisted of:[3]
2016 edition[edit]
The 2016 edition of the competition gathered 127 submissions from over 250 participants from 40 countries. The first prize of the 2016 edition was received by Jin Young Song (Architect and Assistant Professor, Department of Architecture, University at Buffalo], State University of New York) and Jongmin Shim (Assistant Professor, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, State University of New York) for the “Snapping façade”. 2017 edition[edit]
The 2016 edition of the competition gathered over 90 submissions from 200 participants from 40 countries. The first prize was received by Swiss architect Dimo Ivanov for “CIVILIZATION 0.000”. The jury in the 2017 edition consisted of:[5]

2019 edition[edit]
Registration for the competition is open until December 1, 2019. The project submission deadline is December 20, 2019. The winners will be announced on February 1, 2020. The winner and the laureates of the main prizes will be awarded cash prizes and will be invited to present their projects at the Solarlux Campus (Germany) on April 23-24, 2020. The jury in the 2019 edition will consist of:

Laka Accelerator[edit]
Laka Accelerator is a term for a network of international partners of Laka Architektura, who can offer the competition participants an additional distinction by helping them in the investigation and implementation of selected designs submitted to the competition. Their role is to provide professional consulting, international press coverage, as well as financial and substantial support of sponsors. The additional prize, which is the possibility of being considered by the Acceleration Partners, will be introduced in the next editions of the competition and is separate from the process of choosing the winners.[7] The partners of the Laka Competition and Laka Accelerator are among others:

Laka Perspectives[8][edit]
Laka Perspectives is a series of books of interviews with renowned experts in architecture on innovation, future cities, green architecture, sustainable design, dreams and aspirations, smart materials, iconic buildings etc., in the mission to raise awareness and spread the word about the current possibilities in directions of development for architects worldwide. The first volume of the book (Laka Perspectives vol. 1) featured Phil McCormick, Nathalie de Vries, Maria Aiolova, Thom Faulders, Daniel Koehler & Rasa Navasaitytė, Tobias Wallisser, Doris Kim Sung, and more, while Laka Perspectives vol. 2 – Toyo Ito, Yona Friedman, Robert Konieczny, Qun Dang, and more.
Design that Educates Awards[edit]
The Design that Educates Awards (DtEA) focus on the recognition and promotion of architecture and design that can educate, showcasing specific possibilities and challenges, explain sociocultural factors and influences, outline scenarios for future development, in the categories of architectural design, product design, universal design, and responsive design. The theme of the awards has been inspired by the research called ‘Educating Buildings’ (‘Bildende Bauten’) by Dr. Peter Kuczia.
