The 1958 London Bus Strike was caused by the lack of any decent pay rises since the war years, and far from doing any good, it did a great deal of harm. When all of the garages had crept back to work, without much of a result, they were so short of staff and other resources that London Transport imposed swingeing cuts to the services. They cut schedules (frequency), early and late buses, Saturday journeys were cut severely, and some Sunday services ceased altogether, even to the extent of leaving some previously served roads without any kind of service at all. This resulted in the loss of passengers, many of whom bought cars instead. This caused traffic congestion which then delayed the buses which were still running, and so a vicious circle was created.
