ROUGH DRAFT

My additions keep getting taken down from the main space of the article.

Economic Impact in Host Countries

South Korea

Studies have concluded that tourists visiting for the World Cup spent 1.8 times that of a regular tourist (US$1229) while in South Korea. With about 232,800 tourists visiting for the global sporting event, the total expenditure from the World Cup alone is estimated to be about 522 million U.S. dollars. This was money spent uniquely on World Cup related activities. It should be noted that there was an additional US$2242 million spent by those tourist on other activities not related to the sporting event itself. (This includes culture/recreation, shopping, accommodations, transportation, and food/beverage.)[1]

Spending from World Cup tourists created US$307 million of income, US$713 million of valued added, and US$71 million of indirect tax.[1]

Spending incurred from hosting this event created 31,349 "full-time equivalent" jobs. With the hotel, recreation, and restaurant sectors enjoying the greatest growth.[1]

Total output from the World Cup is estimated to be US$1.3 billion.

Japan

While expenditure for infrastructure improvements in preparation for the event totaled at about US$5.6 billion, the Dentsu Institute of Human Studies estimates a US$24.8 billion total impact for Japan. This accounted for .6% of their GDP in the year 2002.[2] There was a direct spending increase of US$8.6 resulting from the event. Indirectly from the event itself, the domestic professional soccer league, the 'J-league', enjoyed increased growth and revenue following the World Cup. [3]

Project Proposal

The 2002 World Cup was jointly hosted by Japan and Korea. As apart of my project, I would like to look to research some of the economic implications, such as the effects of building the new stadiums in the area, possible increased tourism, and increased foreign investment. There is often criticisms because of some of the negative externalities when holding these massive sporting events (World Cups, Olympics, etc.) in lesser developed countries. I am curious to what the affects where in Japan and Korea. Positive? I’m curious to what the research points to now that a few years have taken place. I will add this information to the 2002 World Cup page— while it is a robust page, there isn’t information on this topic included.

Project Ideas

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_Stadium_(Yokohama)

The 2002 World Cup was hosted jointly by both Japan and Korea. It was generally seen as a huge success and increased good will each country had for each other. The final was in Nissan Stadium. It is a decently covered topic, but having done a tour of the facility myself I know there is a lot of information that can be added to the page.

Surprisingly, there is no mention of the Pokémon store in Yokohama or of the Pikachu parade on the Pokemon page. Maybe I can add a few details in that regard..?

There I could add some info about how there are unique jingles at each station along the Yamanote line. As well as the history of that..?
