Charles Reid was a Nineteenth Century Scottish photographer who produced a large quantity of animal studies (e.g. sheep, cattle, horses and birds).
Biography[edit]
Charles Reid was born on xx xxxx 1837 in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.[1][2] His father was William Reid and his mother was Isabella Findlater.
Originally working as a farm servant, he took up animal photography when a vistor left behind a camera. In an 1902 article in the Chicago Breeders' Gazette, Reid told how he was encouraged by George W. Wilson of Aberdeen who had seen his early amateur work.[3]
The 1861 Census shows that Charles Reid ran a photography studio in New Pitsligo (not far from his native Turriff).
He moved to Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1875.[2]
He became the official photographer to the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland.[2]
He was also president of the Wishaw Liberal Association.[2]
Awards[edit]
In 1890, he was awared a Silver Medal in the Instantaneous category at the Edinburgh Photographic Exhibition.[4]
Death[edit]
Charles Reid died on Sunday 13th January 1929.[2]
His son, also Charles Reid, carried on the family business in Wishaw.
