Though Wassily Kandinsky has been known as the father of abstraction, Hilma af Klint's work actually predates his by several years according to experts.[1] Curators of modern art have likened her work to the painter Georgia O'Keefe, as af Klint's has been similarly overlooked historically.[2] Despite the absence of historical scholarly attention to women abstractionists, their works enriched the development of the modernist movement of the 20th century through unique viewpoints.[3]
Original draft:
Hilma af Klint was actually the first abstract artist, Wassily Kandinsky has been known as the father of abstraction, but af Klint's work actually predates his by several years[1]. Another well-known now but under credited in the past female artist is Georgia O'Keefe. O'Keefe's work, much like that of af Klint's, was overlooked[2]. It is important to celebrate and pay respect to female abstract artists for their enrichment to modernism, creativity and different viewpoint, and new histories that have been made in the 20th century[3].
