The 2005 Colorado vs. Texas football game was held on October 15 2005 at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Of all the teams on Texas's regular season schedule, Colorado had the best historical record against Texas up to the start of the season. The all-time record was tied at 7-7, and the record since the formation of the Big 12 conference was tied at 3-3.[1] Texas established a lead early in the game and never lost it; they led 35-10 at halftime and defeated the 2005 Colorado team by a final score of 42-17.[2]

Texas won the coin toss and elected to defer. Colorado ended up punting on their first possession. On the first Longhorn drive, they used 16 plays and 7:40 of game time to go 90 yards for a touchdown. The scoring play was a one-yard rush by Vince Young. Colorado punted again and Texas responded with another touchdown, this one in 6 plays, 67 yards, 03:05 in time of possession culminating in 16 yard run by Vince Young. Colorado was two plays into their third possession when the first quarter ended.[2]

The Colorado drive made progress into UT territory but ended when quarterback Joel Klatt's pass was intercepted by Aaron Ross at the 20 yard line. Ross ran the ball out to the 25 where he fumbled the ball and recovered it himself. UT's Selvin Young scored a touchdown four plays later. Colorado got the ball on their own 16 but they were unable to gain any yards and they punted the ball back to Texas. Texas scored another touchdown to make four touchdowns on four opportunities. At this point the Buffaloes made it onto the scoreboard with an eleven play drive ending in a 48 yard field goal by Mason Crosby. UT replied with a touchdown in five plays. Greg Johnson kicked off for Texas and CU's Stephone Robinson received the ball at the three yard line and took it out to the 33. Six plays later Klatt completed an eight yard pass to Evan Judge for a touchdown with one second left in the half.[2]

UT's opening drive of the second half ended in a 39 yard David Pino field goal attempt but it went wide to the right of the goal posts. Colorado drove to mid-field but then had to punt. Texas also punted, followed by another CU punt. The third quarter ended with Texas at the CU 25 and ahead by 25.[2]

Texas completed that drive with a 13 yard pass from Vince Young to Limas Sweed for a touchdown. Colorado's next series ended in a punt downed at the UT6 yard line. On third down, Vince Young completed a pass to Ramonce Taylor at the UT11. Colorado's Terr Washington forced Taylor to fumble and Washington recovered the ball at the 11. Longhorn Mike Garcia committed a personal foul on the play so the ball was moved half the distance to the goal; Colorado started their drive at the UT5. Their first play was a Byron Ellis run up the middle for a one yard gain. Joel Klatt then attempted a pass to Jo Klopfenstein but the play was broken up by Michael Huff. On third down, Klatt attempted a pass to Evan Judge but Cedric Griffin prevented the completion. Colorado called a time out to consider their fourth down play options. When play resumed, Klatt completed the four yard touchdown pass to Jo Klopfenstein. The extra point by Mason Crosby made the score Colorado 17, Texas 42.[2]

Vince Young left the game and was replaced by Matt Nordgren who was unable to lead Texas to a first down. CU's back-up quarterback James Cox was no more successful and Colorado also went three-and-out. UT again failed to make a first down and punted the ball to the Buffaloes. This time, Colorado fumbled and the Longhorns recovered at the CU37. The 'Horns ran eight straight rushing plays netting them two first downs. With second and goal at the Colorado ten, Texas took a knee to bring garbage time to a close. The final score was UT42, CU17.[2]

On this day Vince Young had perhaps the best statistical performance of his career to date, completing 25 of 29 passing attempts for 336 yards and 2 passing touchdowns in addition to 58 yards rushing and 3 rushing TD's.[2] His 86.2% completion percentage set a new single-game record for UT quarterbacks, breaking his previous record of 85.7% set against Oklahoma State in 2004. After the game, Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett said of Young's passing performance, "We can’t do that in practice against air.”[3]
