The Australian Magazine; or, Compendium of Religious, Literary, and Miscellaneous Intelligence was Australia's first periodical[1], published in Sydney by Robert Howe, son of George Howe.[2] The magazine was established by Wesleyan Methodists Benjamin Carvosso, Walter Lawry and Ralph Mansfield against the wishes of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Committee.[3][4]

The periodical published thirteen monthly issues between 1 May 1821 and May 1822, when it announced it would become a quarterly due to ??,[5] however the only subsequent issue was September 1822.[dubious ][2] The issues are bound into two volumes.

Ralph Mansfield went on to become the editor of the Sydney Gazette in 1829.[3]
