Alwatan is the widely disseminated Arabic newspaper in Oman. Although it is a privately owned newspaper, it took the lead even over a state-owned newspaper (Oman newspaper). Many government institutions as well private ones subscribe to it on annual basis and its local and international news are highly credited by Omanis and expatriates in the country.

The newspaper launched its website (www.alwatan.com) quite early compared to the newspapers in the region and gained a lot of viewers in the Sultanate and more importantly outside it. It provide of course daily news and articles most of which are selected from the original printed version. In addition, the online newspaper links to a PDF-formatted archive that can be accessed online too. However, updating this archive is not done daily and sometimes you would find a big gap between the current day news and the latest update in the archive.

All in all, the online version of Alwatan newspaper is an asset to its contribution in disseminating news about Oman in a wider context like the world wide web.
