Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biography/Naming Deceased Indigenous Australians
[edit]Naming deceased Indigenous Australians is considered disrespectful. Family or community members may allow a person to be named, either granting permission to a specific group, or to all. Traditionally, many Indigenous Australian communities will stop using a persons name during a mourning period, and a substitute may be used instead.
[to do: find references backing up a consensus around naming practises. Or, create list of naming practises for different communities with clear examples.]
Template for Recently Deceased Indigenous Australians
[edit]Proposed name: {{Recent death Indigenous Australians}}
This article is about a person who has recently died and whose former full names have been removed until is deemed appropriate by their family or community. Editors should avoid using the person's full name until it has been confirmed that it is acceptable to do so. Knowledge about the circumstances of the death and surrounding events may change rapidly as more facts come to light. Initial news reports may be unreliable, and the most recent updates to this article may not reflect the most current information. |
Based on Wikipedia:Current event templates. Wording needs to be improved. More information needed on when to remove the template.
Create information on how a name or image can be used. Example: if permission is extended to one media publication it does not mean everyone can use a person's former name (i.e. SBS was granted permission to use Ms Dhu's name in their article)
