The American Limb Preservation Society (ALPS) was founded on October 9, 2020 during the annual Diabetic Foot Global Conference known as DFCon.</ref>Crews RT, Lepow BD, Mills Sr, JL, et al. A limb is a peninsula and no clinician is an island: Introducing the American Limb Preservation Society (ALPS). Foot Ankle Surg (N Y). 2021;1(1):100005. doi: 10.1016/j.fastrc.2021.100005. Epub 2021 Mar 29.</ref>

A cornerstone of ALPS is the “toe and flow” model, which emphasizes collaboration between podiatrists and vascular surgeons in interdisciplinary teams to improve blood flow to facilitate wound healing in the lower extremity.[1] This treatment approach has reportedly resulted in decreased rates of hospitalization, amputation and wound recurrence in patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs).[1][2]

David G. Armstrong, the founding president of ALPS, said the organization will be an “interdisciplinary bridge” that brings like-minded clinicians from different disciplines together to improve limb salvage outcomes in high-risk patients with diabetes and peripheral artery disease (PAD) or the more advanced form of PAD called chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI).[3] Armstrong also envisions ALPS having online tools to facilitate clinical networking between clinicians interested in limb preservation.[4]

The American Limb Preservation Society formed a strategic partnership with the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) in July 2021 and is affiliated with the long-running DFCon meeting as well.[4]

ALPS founders[edit]

In addition to Armstrong, the founding leadership of ALPS includes: Joseph L. Mills, Vice-President of the Society for Vascular Surgery and Professor and Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at the Baylor College of Medicine; Michael S. Conte, Professor and Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco; Stephanie Wu, Dean of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine at the Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science]]; Brian Lepow, Assistant Professor at the Baylor College of Medicine; and Ryan Crews, Associate Professor in the Department of Podiatric Surgery and Applied Biomechanics at the Dr. William M. Scholl College.[citation needed]
