St John's Wood Road Baptist Church is an evangelical Baptist church in St John's Wood, London. The church is situated between Lord's Cricket Ground and Maida Vale.

History[edit]

Old Building

St. John’s Wood Road Baptist Church began meeting in the mid 1820’s. It was started by a group of 30 or so Christians, and in it’s first 50 years grew to over 400 members. In the early 1900’s the church moved to the site it now occupies, and began meeting in the present building in 1987. In the first part of the 1900’s the church was very active in missionary endeavour, sending missionaries to India in particular. However from the Second World War the number of people meeting together in the church declined as was the case at the time in many other churches in London.[1]

Present Day[edit]

Today, the church is a small, but growing, group of Christians. Typically around 30 to 50 people attend the Sunday morning meeting each week, with London's cultural diversity providing people of all ages from countries all over the world.[1]

Meetings[edit]

The main meeting is at 10:45 every Sunday. The first Sunday of each month is a family service, and on all other Sundays there is a children's church for those aged 2-11. Each meeting includes singing (accompanied by musicians from the church), prayer, a children's talk, a Bible reading and a sermon based on the Bible reading. Drinks are served after the meeting and then everyone is welcome to stay for a cooked lunch, made by members of the church. In the afternoon, Grace Café at 3:00 and Grace Talks at 5:00 provide a relaxed atmosphere for Christian fellowship. The church plans to start a Sunday evening meeting from September 2012.

Two mid-week Bible study groups are run by the church in local houses, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. The church also regularly runs Christianity Explored courses for those wishing to find out more about the Christian faith.[1]
