skin help

[edit]

I've just changed skins under My preferences and I find the new skin (Iforget the name) has a couple of details which I now find I don't like, but when I go to my preferences again, the Skins option does not do anything, so I am now stuck with an improperly working skin and I can't switch to another.

How can I revert to the default skin, or try a different one? --JAXHERE | Talk 21:38, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

This is a very very wild guess, but this link might do the trick? (I cross my fingers) -- lucasbfr talk 21:45, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately that link doesn't do anything to help. --JAXHERE | Talk 21:49, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Try clearing the browser cache, using the instructions in Special:Preferences. -Amarkov blahedits 21:51, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
Woops wrong link... try this one? But clearing the cache might be the best thing to do -- lucasbfr talk 22:08, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
If the above doesn't help please try the help desk. Somitho 22:18, 20 December 2006 (UTC)
        • Whew! I tried all the above and nothing worked. The second special link above works but my problem was not getting into the preferences page, but getting any changes made once I was there.
FYI, the skin which was giving me the problems was "Chick" the first on the list in my screen. It seems, that on my system (at least) some of the links on the preferences page were not activated when I passed my cursor over the underlined text. I managed to get around this by using my TAB key to select the various links from top to bottom on the page and when the skins link was activated, I hit my enter key and that option opened up. I had to do the same thing to activate the SAVE button, but finally I got back to the classic (default) skin which I know works.
The question now is how do I report this problem to someone who might want to see if there are fixes available? By the way, has anyone else had any problems with this skin or any other alternatives? Thanks to everyone for trying to help --JAXHERE | Talk 22:27, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza!

[edit]

Welcome, Jaxhere, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. You can support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact our administrator general Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Chile city Naming Convention

[edit]

Hi Jack. Could you please comment on your edit this morning to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements) at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (settlements)#Chile? In particular, is this discussed somewhere and broadly agreed as the convention, or are you trying to impose a rule where no convention existed? Thanks. --Scott Davis Talk 11:36, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Hello Scott, I've made a reply on the Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (settlements)#Chile? page. I'd only like to clarify that I don't think the term "impose" is quite the right one for what I was attempting. I was trying to establish a guideline where nothing exists so that people who seek out some direction at least have some idea of what to do. I view my actions as taking a bold step to put in something which wasn't there and, frankly, felt that the user who simply removed the edit without even waiting for any discussion was being rather autocratic and certainly wasn't assuming good faith on my part.
I see that maybe I should have prefaced my addition with a notation that it was a proposal (as is done in a couple of other sections) but I still don't think that my not having done so is justification for simply wiping out what I'd offered.
--JAXHERE | Talk 12:56, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
I'd like to ensure it is noted it was not me who wiped it out - I raised it for discussion/clarification. My deepest concern is simply a lack of discussion for a proposal which would rename nearly every article about towns in Chile, at a time of year when some regular editors may not be watching much.
I chose the word "impose" as the proposed guideline does not follow the current (undocumented) practice for naming articles about cities and towns in Chile, not because I necessarily feel it to be bad. Have you attempted to engage any other regular editors of Chile geography article editors? I see you have moved about 8 articles with no comments yet. Due to the holiday season, I'd try to give them a few more days than otherwise to see what is flushed out, or try to find somewhere to reach consensus from regular editors of Chile articles. --Scott Davis Talk 12:46, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, Scott, I was aware that it was not you who deleted the addition, and I appreciate your restraint in that regard. It was the second commentator who I felt was trigger happy.
I'd like to thank you for your guideance on how to proceed with adding this to the conventions.JAXHERE | Talk 15:47, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
No worries. I'd rather see a well-planned and functional convention that allows contributors to get on with the job of creating a useful encyclopaedia rather than an endless revert war or argument over the names of the articles. Naming conventions that produce natural and consistent names (such as either ", Chile" or ", Region") facilitate this much better than ad hoc disambiguation using different terms and syntax for each article. As an observer, I fullly support your efforts, but wanted to ensure those editors affected also are aware and support them. --Scott Davis Talk 13:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

I've been away a bit, so I haven't had a chance to thank you for your speedy aciton on my user page. I like what you've done but I'm wondering if you could at least give me a clue as to how to incorporate rollup sections within the page you've set out?--JAXHERE | Talk 02:28, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

That's okay. By rollup sections, do you mean show/hide sections? sign here HAPPY HOLIDAYS!s d 3 1 4 1 5 π 12:33, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Yes, show/hidesections are exactly what I mean. I've seen them on some user's pages but I can't remember where right now.JAXHERE | Talk 12:44, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
