Quique Domenech', born June 6 1974 in Santurce, Puerto Rico [1] is a Puerto Rican Cuatrista. Domenech studied the Cuatro from the age of six. At 11 he entered a five year program at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture studying the cuatro and music theory. Domenech now has over 30 years of live performances, recording, producing and arranging music for the instrument. He also plays the guitar, Venezuelan cuatro, Cuban tres, and bass. [2]

Career[edit]

Early years[edit]

The first performances for Domenech were with Vicente Carattini and Los Cantores de San Juan at the age of 12. Upon graduating from the Puerto Rican Cultural Institute, he participated as part of Francisco López Cruz's Orquesta de Cuatro. At that time he also formed the group Renacer Campesino. With them he did a number of recordings, including “Sentimientos"in 1994, "Crossing Borders" in 1995 and "Dreams, Land and Song" in 1996. During this time he also continued pursuing his solo career. He contributed, on the Cuatro, to the soundtrack of the film "La Guagua Aérea" by Luis Molina. He has also performed and recorded in collaboration with Chucho Avellanet - a Christmas album entitled “Que no se perda la essence”; with Haciendo Punto en Otro Son; and a number of recordings with Tony Croatto. [3] [4]

He released his first solo album, entitled “Refrescante”, on CDT Records in 1997, which included a number of songs composed by Domenech. His second solo album, titled "Images" followed in 1998.

In 2000, Domenech contacted Cuatro artisan Jaime Alicea to purchase an instrument. From that contact came a years long relationship, within which Alicea built the perfect instrument tailored to Domenech. In that time he also released his third album, “Evolución”. [5] [4]

Throughout the years from 1984 through the present, Domenech recorded several songs and albums, both solo, and as a participant in collaboration with other artists. These included his “30 años pa’ mi gente” previewed in 2012 in Bayamón, along with the Puerto Rico Philharmonic Orchestra. [6]

Present[edit]

In 2015, Domenech’s group Sonido Tré (then called simply Tré) was interviewed by Latino Rebels, who commented “Tré presents a refreshing, and even radical, proposal: to shine the Puerto Rican cuatro, breaking the paradigm and the informal sentence of being an exclusive instrument of Christmas music.” Domenech commented in that interview “I've been struggling with it all my life. The cuatro is like any other instrument, like the piano or the guitar. What happens is that it is the national instrument of Puerto Rico. The media boxed our music and the cuatro at Christmas time. So every time a four is heard, people identify it as Christmas. I have struggled with that paradigm all my career and showing that the cuatro can play any musical genre.” [7]

Since moving to Orlando Florida, Domenech has been concentrating most of his efforts on development of Sonido Tré, along with Mayda Belen, his wife and vocalist for the group. Domenech and his group, also including vocalist Edgar Rios, have performed throughout Puerto Rico and the mainland, and recorded several albums.[1][8][9] [10]
