Introduction Matvey Lykov[edit]

Matvey Lykov is a Russian model and actor. He has been a fashion model for runway and photos for major fashion labels, designers and haute couture magazines since 2007. As an actor he is most noted for his leading role as "Arman" in the internationally successful Russian fantasy movie "I am Dragon".[21][22]

Early life[edit]

Matvey Lykov was born on 8 April 1987 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Being the son of the Russian actor Alexander Lykov,(ru)[23][24][25] he made his first acting experiences at a very young age when he starred alongside his father in the Russian TV movie "Thomas Becket" at the age of 5.[22][26]

Just like his father,[27] Matvey Lykov was an amateur triathlete in his youth.[24]

Education[edit]

Matvey Lykov had originally planned to become a translator.[24] He attended a St. Petersburg school specialised in foreign language studies and translation, [28][22][26] and graduated early, at the age of 16.[24][29] He then studied at the Institute of Foreign Languages[25][30] of the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.[22][28][30] and graduated from university with a Master's degree at the age of 20. He was working as an English tutor when he went to New York City and was discovered as a model.[24][31]

After moving to Paris in 2011, he attended The Paris International School of Film and Television ("École Internationale de Création Audiovisuelle et de Réalisation")[24][25][30] that he graduated from in 2015 with major in Directing.[30][32][22]

He is fluent in five languages,[33][27][34] his native language Russian,[35] English,[36][30][34] French,[34][35][30] Spanish[35][36][30] and Italian;[34][35] and also speaks basic Mandarin.[33]

Career[edit]

Lykov had not planned to become a model.[24] In 2007, after graduating from the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, Lykov decided to join the Work and Travel USA program and spend the summer in New York City.[37][38][35] Due to a mistake by the immigration service in his documents, he was not allowed to work in his profession in the United States,[39][38] and was forced to take very low-paid jobs as a courier and as a cleaner.[39][24] Thus, he decided to follow a casting call of the New York model agency "Fusion Models", hoping to be able to earn needed extra money.[40][38][41]

After having been signed by Fusion Models, he made his runway debut at the 2007 New York Fashion Week,[37] and quickly became one of the most successful male models in the world.[22][24][42][43] In 2008 he was listed among the world's top 25 most popular male models,[44] and in 2009, he entered the list of the top 10 male fashion models[22][45][46][46] (and eventually peaked in the Top 5 later in his career)[47] and the world's top 10 most in demand (male and female) runway models.[22][26][48][49] He is considered "the first male Russian supermodel".[47][50][35][32][51]

In 2008 he became the face of Jil Sander[35][44][52] and in in 2012 the face of Gucci.[24][35][51]

Lykov has been presented by Model Agencies in New York (IMG Models[53][54] and Fusion Models),[22][55] Paris (Success Models),[56][54] Milan (D'Management Group),[57][54] London (Elite Models[57][58] and SUPA Model Management),[59] Hamburg (M4 Model Management),[57][60] Berlin (Next Model Management and VIVA Models),[61] Barcelona (View Management[60][57] and Traffic Management)[62][63] and Copenhagen (Scoop Models).[57][54]

Voting process[edit]

The winners of the RNMAs are chosen by an expert jury, namely by the more than 150 members of the Academy of Russian Music,[240][270][271] called "Academicians".[241][272]

In the first round of the the evaluation process, nominees are suggested by production centers, record labels and other professionals of the Russian music scene; but also artists have the possibility to apply themselves.[267] Approximately a month before the award ceremony, the suggested nominees are announced at the Russian National Music Award Gala Dinner.[246][247] With the gala dinner, the expert voting of the Academicians is officially launched.[246] Then, in an anonymous online voting, each Academy member can cast one vote in each category.[246][267][273] Both the finalists/"nominees" and the winners are determined by the results of that expert voting. On 31 November the voting traditionally closes, and in early December, the top nominees who received the most Acedamician votes within each category are presented as "finalists" to the media. In the same month, the winners are revealed at the Russian National Music Award Ceremony.[274][275]

The voting process is controlled by the British international audit and consulting company Ernst & Young[241][245][276] that keeps the voting results a secret, even to the Academy and the event organisers themselves, until the winners are announced at the award ceremony.[245][277]

The winners receive a diploma and a gold statuette called "Prima".[255][265]
