Local elections were held in the Province of Laguna on May 14, 2001 as part of the General election. Voter's selected candidate's for all local positions: a city/town Mayor, Vice Mayor and Councilor's, as well as the Member's of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, the Vice Governor, the Governor and Representative's for the four District's of Laguna to the Congress.

Background[edit]

In 1998 election, then-Governor Jose Lina Jr. sought a second term under the Laban ng Makabayang Masang Pilipino (LAMMP). Ended at Lina's landslide victory over the candidate of the Lakas–CMD's then-3rd District Congressman Florante Aquino. Lina garnered 602,461 votes over Aquino's 132,500 votes. This is considered as the widest margin of the winning candidate over to the runner-up since the 1971 election.

Lina's running-mate, then-Vice Governor Teresita Lazaro also running under the same Party (LAMMP), also won her second full-term. Lazaro's victory is not like Lina. Lazaro faced Ma. Alita Mercado of the Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC). Luckily, Lazaro won, garnering 267,084 votes over 245,798 votes of Mercado. The bet of the Lakas–CMD former Congressman Roy Almoro ended-up in the third place getting 157,070 votes.

Candidates[edit]

As the Governor, Vice Governor, and Member's of the House of Representatives and Provincial Board are elected on the same Ballot. The Gubernatorial candidate's may present a slate of candidate's for each Position for every District within the Province.
