THIS IS AN ARTICLE-IN-PROGRESS

KZFC is the unofficial name of an Internet radio station owned by Fort Collins Youth Broadcasting, a non-profit organization setup to create a radio station for high school students in Fort Collins. Although an official name for the station has not been announced yet, it seems that KZFC is being used as a temporary name.

The Internet station signed on at 1:45:52 AM Eastern Time on June 6, 2007, and still does not run any form of station identification, but only plays music and PSAs regarding the Internet Radio Equality Act at the bottom of the hour. According to SAM Broadcaster, the first song played was Linkin Park's single "What I've Done."

Beginnings

[edit]

The initial idea of a radio station for high school students sparked the interest of Jake Wood, a then-sophomore at Poudre High School. After arranging a board of directors and turning in a Capstone project application, Wood filed the articles of incorporation for Fort Collins Youth Broadcasting, Inc.

As research continued, it was discovered that there was no way to cover Fort Collins with a usable signal. The idea of FM radio was abandoned in exchange for easier, cheaper Internet radio.

FM Re-visit

[edit]

However, it was announced in a blog posting on June 23, 2007, that FCYB was going to attempt to negotiate with EMF Broadcasting for moving their station, KLHV, located on 88.3 MHz, to 88.1 MHz. This would then allow FCYB to safely broadcast on 88.5 MHz from Nunn without causing interference to KRFC or KLHV. Should EMF agree to the move, KRMA would have to approve both the move of KLHV, as well as the signal of KZFC, due to FCC TV Channel 6 protection requirements. It was also noted in the blog posting that a highly directional antenna pattern would need to be used to avoid contour overlap with KGNU.

KZFC Call Letters

[edit]

Officers of Fort Collins Youth Broadcasting have said in chat rooms that, should FM radio become possible, that they will likely adopt the call sign KZFC. Originally, all the call sign was supposed to mean was KZ Fort Collins, however, a listener quickly came up with Kangaroo Zombies from Canada, and it has been suggested that this may be adopted as an "unofficial call sign meaning" because of its potential comedic value.
