Zahir Hussain[1] (Born 5th August, 1969) also known as Sir Zahir, had just arrived in Pakistan after attending Vincennes University at Vincennes, Indiana, where he had received his Associate of Arts Degree in English and teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), when he decided to initiate a language institute in the name of American Language Center. After mobilizing his painstaking efforts with meager resources, he finally established this non-profit English language teaching institute at Panjgur in the year 1993. He currently runs a state of art English language Institute in the name of School of Intensive Teaching (SIT) at Hub. His facility is equipped with the cutting edge technology, effective teaching methodologies, and a language teaching and learning library.

Early Life[edit]

Zahir Hussain, a graduate of Vincennes University at Vincennes, Indiana-U.S.A., had a goal which he had flourished and nurtured for many years to establish an institution which could provide English language instructions to the underprivileged students, especially the girls in his hometown. Therefore, upon his return from the United States, he started teaching English language at an English language institute in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan. He taught there for six months while he advocated his mission of establishing an English language center in his hometown. He established and mobilized a support group, a social catalyst; within the community to help foster his life-long dream. He explored and utilized different avenues for promoting his longstanding dream of opening an English language center at Panjgur. In the past, people of Panjgur would send their children 500 miles away to Karachi or Quetta to study English. For those parents, it was a great opportunity to rally support for Zahir’s proposal to launch an English language institute in their hometown because it was economically very advantageous for them. However, they were small in number. There were not enough people onboard to bring their children to this newly conceived English center soon to be instituted. After six months of rigorous campaigning, Zahir finally decided to take the next step and moved to Panjgur and began his dream project. He published pamphlets and banners, and launched a full scale campaign with the assistance of his family and friends including some of the prospective students’ parents. He disseminated and propagated the message of inaugurating an English language center in every corner of Panjgur. He was immediately countered by the religious fanatics with their anti-English language center campaign. This convulsed his initiative but not his morale; thus, he continued his instigation movement with a greater force.

Education[edit]

Hussain attended Government High School Gramkan in 1983 for his matriculation and passed Fundamental of Science (F.Sc) from Degree College Panjgur in 1985. He received his bachelor of science (B.Sc) from Science College Quetta. He graduated from Vincennes University Indiana USA and got Associate of Arts Degree in English and teaching English as a Second Language (ESL).

Institutions: 1993–present[edit]

American English Language Center (A-E-L-C) (1993)[edit]

A-E-L-C started the first batch with 60 students in 1993. There were 45 male students, a great and 15 female, which a great number were from extended family. Initially, the centre catered to the needs of male students only and, more importantly, it was not taken very seriously. However, when male students of the centre excelled in the language course due to Hussain’s effective teaching techniques, more and more local people rushed to the institute. He initiated teaching them Functional English, and for that he selected the course of American Streamline which was the best course at that time. Meanwhile, he started classes for writing for those students who had finished the Destination course of the Streamline. Students started developing interests due to his exclusive style of teaching. A-E-L-C conducted many speech as well as discussion debates where most of the students took effective part. Sir Zahir tells public that why he chose English Language to teach in Panjgur, “Even the brightest students used to fail in the competitive civil, medical and engineering exams due to poor command over English. I decided to grapple with challenge of English first” he recalled.

Instead of losing hope, he implemented the proverbial adage ‘charity begins from home’ in practice. “The first class for female students at the institute was only attended by the girls of my own family,” he said. Though the beginning was, understandably, troublesome for Hussain, a lot of success awaited him.

The Oasis School Panjgur (2000)[edit]

In 2000, Hussain entrenched “The Oasis Academy” which included a school that later became the apple eye of Panjgur. Oasis assisted the students of Panjgur in many ways. Students got better education correlating to Governmental Schools. By virtue of their English Language skills, many students were adequate to get jobs in different government and private sectors. A number of students passed both CSS and PCS exams and are now serving in assorted departments throughout country. Many writers and journalist have also been produced by this institute. One of the great examples in this regard is Mr. Malik Siraj Akbar who is a fresh graduate from Harvard University USA. There are many other students who are also serving in different positions in all over the world.

Cambridge Academy Panjgur (2013)[edit]

In 2013, Hussain initiated another Oasis in Panjgur called Cambridge. It also optimistically became one of the best institutes in terms of producing very proficient students in Baluchistan.

School of Intensive Teaching (2015)[edit]
