Community MusicWorks is a community-based music education and performance non-profit organization serving inner-city youth and families in Providence, Rhode Island. Community MusicWorks was described in the New Yorker as "a revolutionary organization in which the distinction between performing and teaching disappears." [1]
Community MusicWorks was founded in 1997[2] by MacArthur Fellowship "Genius Grant" recipient and violist musician Sebastian Ruth. In 2010, Community MusicWorks was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award by First Lady Michelle Obama. [3]
In addition to providing instrument instruction in violin, viola and cello and Community MusicWorks Community MusicWorks offers a two-year Fellowship Program, and CMW resident musicians perform as the ensemble MusicWorks Collective in a concert series throughout Providence and surrounding communities.
