About[edit]

Founded in 2002 by Francesca von Habsburg in Vienna, Austria, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21) represents the fourth generation of the Thyssen family’s commitment to the arts.

The foundation is dedicated primarily to the commissioning and dissemination of ambitious, experimental, and unconventional projects that defy traditional categorizations. This approach has gained the collection a pioneering reputation throughout the world. The foundation’s projects promote artistic practices that are architectural, context- and site-specific, performative, and often informed by an interest in social aesthetics and environmental concerns. Many of the projects reflect the shift away from disciplinary to transdisciplinary practices embracing architecture, sound, music, and science. The “cross-pollination” of disciplines challenges interpretation and the traditions of collecting, preserving, and presenting works of art. This approach reflects the vision of TBA21’s founder, Francesca von Habsburg.

In addition, TBA21 shares its collection and commissions with numerous museums and public institutions. Most commissions, initiated and produced by the foundation, form an integral part of major contemporary art exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale, the Istanbul Biennial, and documenta, where new works are very much on the agenda. In past years, crossover performative projects were realized through a number of collaborations, notably with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, Artangel in London, and the Wiener Festwochen. Since May 2012, Vienna’s Augarten park has been transformed into a revitalized center for the arts under the aegis of Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary.

TBA21-Augarten is the foundations's permanent exhibition space in Vienna, dedicated to monographic presentations of TBA21's collection, engaging its audiences with participatory and experimental artistic formats. TBA21’s complementary live-arts program is presented on David Adjaye’s open-air stage, which hosts a lively series of spoken-word performances, concerts, and related activities, along with the café/restaurant Die AU and a bookshop stocked with selected publications. The admission to TBA21–Augarten is free.

TBA21 - The Current[edit]

The Current is the exploratory soul of TBA21. It was conceived to raise awareness for today’s most urgent ecological, social, and economic issues. Through its expeditions on sea and land, The Current seeks to redefine the culture of exploration and discovery in the 21st century.

Organised in three-year cycles, TBA21 The Current is a multiphase fellowship that provides artists, curators, scientists, and other cultural producers a platform that cultivates transdisciplinary practice and the exchange of ideas.

Avoiding the structures of conventional conferences, think tanks, or residencies, TBA21 The Current seeks to re-imagine knowledge production and the methods in which we present, understand, and exchange information.

TBA21 The Current champions the notion of the journey as a goal in itself. This idea is made manifest for participants via an annual immersive experience, or expedition, aboard the research vessel Dardanella, as the ocean provides a singular arena in which sociopolitical, economic, and environmental factors converge with the spirit of exploration.

Each Current will be led by three curators (expedition Leaders) selected by TBA21. Each expedition Leader guides one expedition annually over the course of three years and proposes five participants (Fellows), who can take part in one or several expeditions throughout The Current. Each Fellow will participate in a 10- to 14-day expedition aboard the Dardanella. Fellows then contribute to one public presentation, ideally over two to three days, informed by their experiences at sea and the joint fieldwork. Moreover, TBA21 will release an online publication that embraces all media with the aim to share and enrich the experience of TBA21 The Current with a larger community.
