Kyle MacLachlan (born February 22, 1959) is an American actor, best known for his role in cult films such as Blue Velvet and Showgirls, and television series including Twin Peaks and Desperate Housewives. MacLachlan made his acting debut in 1984, portraying Paul Atreides in David Lynch's sci-fi epic Dune.[1] He continued collaborating with Lynch, starring alongside Dennis Hopper and Isabella Rosselini in Blue Velvet in 1986. His starred in three further films, including 1986's The Hidden, 1990's Don't Tell Her It's Me and Oliver Stone's 1991 film The Doors.

In 1990, MacLachlan made his debut television appearance, starring as Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks. Created by David Lynch and Mark Frost, Twin Peaks became a cult hit[2][3] and MacLachlan was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series[4] and and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama.[5] He reprised the role of Dale Cooper for Lynch's 1992 prequel film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me although he was reluctant to return for fear of being typecast.[6] The film marked his final collaboration with David Lynch.

Throughout the 1990s, MacLachlan continued to act in several films and television series. He portrayed Zack Carey in Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls, which received "overwhelming dislike" from critics[7] and collected seven Golden Raspberry Awards from a record thirteen nominations.[8] In 2000, he returned to television, starring as Trey MacDougal in HBO's Sex and the City for twenty-three episodes. The following year, he voiced the character of Donald Love in the video game Grand Theft Auto III. From 2006 to 2012, MacLachlan starred as Orson Hodge in the ABC television series Desperate Housewives and currently guest stars as the Mayor of Portland in the IFC sketch comedy Portlandia.
