I think it´s better not to link to Příbram, it may be confusing - it´s not the exact place, where Dvořák wrote the cycle. In some sentences, the meaning gets lost because it is too long and wordy. Consider dividing sentences or eliminating unnecessary words. I didn't found any photos, I saw some old pictures of the Czech Philharmonic, but I can't remember where. I have to search in a huge pile of books, magazines, and it's sometimes very difficult to remember. And I don't know yet, if Čelanský was present there... Similar situation is with his compositions, the most detailed info I've found is in my source - old Czech music dictionary, which I've bought just few days ago for amazing prize. Ktož jsú boží bojovníci

Yes, I know this war-song since my childhood. The proper variant in old Czech language is Ktož jsú boží bojovníci. Kdo jsou boží bojovníci or Kdož jsou boží bojovníci are the modern versions, rather strange in my opinion. Drdla

Huh, thank you for noticing me. I still have some gaps in my written English. Unfortunately, my source says only: Drdla toured throughout Europe (1899-1905) and the United States (1923-1925). No more informations about his other activities. No specific concerts. My source is trustworthy, but also very laconic. The error is in my translation. A similar situation is with your second objection. Czech original says: "Obdržel titul profesora od rakouského prezidenta (1927)". Anything more. Sorry for my heavy-footed translation, feel free to "undo" it. Btw, Československý hudební slovník is the most detailed source on Czech music till 1960, it's very useful in my opinion. František Škroup

Hi Hrdinský. The Czech titles are O.K. Czech language in 19th century was quite different from current version. It was influenced by German language. E.g. the piano reduction of the first Czech opera Dráteník (I own the version publ. in 1926) bears the title: Drátenjk. Zpěwohra we dwau děgstwích od Josefa Chmelenského. They often used a instead of o, j instead of i, g instead of j etc. etc. I´m not linguistic expert, but Czech sources today often use the modern versions - Dobrou noc, Dráteník. I know, it´s a bit confused - we write Ktož jsú boží bojovníci almost always in the archaic shape, but it´s a household title. I think, it´s better to use the modern version in this instance.

Drahomíra was a Bohemian duchess, and it´s also ancient Slavic woman´s name (occasionally used up to now, at least in the Czech Republic). I hate to admit it, but it´s impossible for me to translate it into English. It´s not easy to decode even the Czech version! (I think, it´s connection of the words precious and peace). Hello Hrdinský. Thank you for nice patriotic barnstar. I have a medal now, like old soldiers :))) (I'm just joking) I really appreciate it, thanks again. I have something new in my sandbox, and I would like to ask for your opinion, since you are my best collaborator here. The topic is somewhat different... I have to admit, it's unpleasant, almost disgusting and very controversial theme, but I haven't found on Internet any English information about it - excluding short notice on the page of Security Information Service of Czech Republic. However, I consider that theme very important for recent Czech history, and I hope, that it may be informative also for non-Czech readers. There's a lot of informations in Czech press, many speculations, it's hard to choose and compile accurate and good info... I've created something, it's just a concept, sketch. (Probably full of my usual stupid "Czenglish" mistakes). Feel free to edit and fix it, and please, let me know, what do you think about that. It's possible, that I'll delete it, but previously I would like to hear some opinions. If you don't want to read it, or to deal with it, I understand. Hello again. Thank you for your patience, interest and help. It's invaluable for me.

• 1. I've replaced "speculated", but I still think, that's the right word. It's quite common in Czech language, although a bit pejorative. But you are probably right, "dealings" will be more intelligible for English readers. Mrázek himself stated: "I was a speculator" - it's in the first part of Kmotr Mrázek.

• 2. Rewritten, is it better now? He tried - together with partners - to take the opportunity offered by chaotic situation in starting Czech economic transformation, and "to launder the dirty money" from previous times.

• 3. Uff, it's not easy... the value is now more than 40 millions in US dollars (I think), but the situation was different ten or fifteen years ago...

• 4. It was really big robbery - billions stolen without any trace. I've found also other cases called similarly (in Czech: Podvod století), but it's not so important for the article. It's just the cliché in the newspaper, I think. (Btw, isn't "robbery" better word??)

• 5. Rewritten, splitted.

• 6. You are right. I've added some substantive facts. The circumstances of his death are unclear... At least for me...

• 7. I've expanded it. The title may be Post-death. (Or Further investigation??)

Two years ago, when Mrázek was still alive, it was very dangerous to publish any informations about him. He was watchful and tried to intimidate also journalists. I´m not paranoiac :)) However, many people close to Mrázek died, and his influence is still apparent in Czech politics. We aren´t on the Wild West (or East) here, but we have also another mafia boss - Radovan Krejčíř. Still alive, a fugitive from justice (justice?). He is really interesting and well-known person in Czech republic, his life reminds me of Sandokan or other exotic heroes from my childhood. He kept sharks at home (one, called "Radovan" is today an attraction in one of the restaurants in Prague), and when Czech police came to arrest him, he escaped through the window on toilet :)) No kidding. His father was killed, and speculations exist, that he was murdered by people close to Mrázek... Interesting topic, I guess. Here is the article on Czech wikipedia. I love If a Thousand Clarinets - the film is stupid, but the music... Many fantastic jazz players and singers - Karel Krautgartner, Jiří Jelínek, Karel Vlach, Waldemar Matuška... - it's encyclopedia of Czech "pop-jazz". I also intend to create the article for Jiří Šlitr, a genius of Czech jazz. A lot of work. Btw, I think, it's better not to title people in articles on wikipedia with a given names. Thanks. Drobnosti a Romantické kusy

Hello Hrdinský. Thanks for your help and important notes. I think, the second Dvořák's trio hasn't stable title. All titles, which I've used, are in my sources - in the score, in the study on Dvořák's chamber works by Šourek, and in the sleeve notes of CDs. All my sources reffer of course to Miniatures, Op. 75a, the translation was maybe confusing. It's possible to unite it, and make that thing more clear. You are right with the key signatures - it was my oversight, the trio and the version for violin and piano are almost identical, and the key signature is of course B flat major in both cases. I'll check and fix it. It's also possible to replace "Trio" with "Terzetto", Terzetto seems to me more Italian than English. I was inspired by the good recording of first two movements of Romantic Pieces here on wikipedia. I like more the version for trio... That´s great! I´ll upload a good map of Moravian ethnographical regions soon, and I´m trying to get also some recordings from Jiří Plocek - an expert on folk music. (I´ve got some recordings - I´ve played in a cimbalom band few years - but the sound quality isn´t sufficient for Wikipedia) I can´t believe, that you know Hrbáč! I think, that´s the best and maybe the most representative music of Moravia. My collection of CDs with the folk music of my homeland is big, but I don´t know any Okinawan music, unfortunately... I´m not able to translate perfectly, you know. The rest was my translation and compilation, and that wasn´t so "poetic" :) I´m not entirely satisfied with the numeration of individual songs. It has changed many times in the past, and it is confusing even in the score! However, I´m sure, that I´ve integrated all songs with all possible titles and Nos. in the correct order. Hello Hrdinský. Your translation seems to be correct. I've compared both versions (with my very poor knowledge of German language), and I can't see any confusion. It is surely possible to use that photo, since we don't have any other portrait of Heinrich XXIV, but I'm not sure with the license. We can either try to obtain a permission from www.coinarchives.com, or upload the image as {{Non-free currency}}, as in 30px|this case. The latter way may be problematic, though. Some editors at the WP Composers are very strongly opposing use of coins in music articles, here is the guideline. The name of his second wife was Bettina (Barbora) Ferdinandiová (10 November 1840, Černé Budy na Sázavě - 14 December 1908, Luhačovice). Smetana married her on 10 July, 1860. She bore him two daughters: Zdeňka Smetanová (married Heydušková) (25 September, 1861 - 4 October 1936, Luhačovice), and Božena Smetanová (married Grafová) (19 February 1863 - 12 December 1941, Vienna). Zdravím znovu. Děkuji mockrát za Vaši pomoc a zájem, velmi si Vaší spolupráce vážím. The Czech background: Ryba used for his mass standard parts of Latin mass, but he created his own text, depicting Czech surrounding and atmosphere, it is like Bethlehem being moved to the middle of Czech lands. In my opinion, this is the main reason of the ongoing popularity of this work: the similarity with idealized world depicted in Czech wooden Bethlehems, reminding the idyllic atmosphere of Christmas in the middle Europe.

The recording mentioned by you is already listed in the article, the only difference is the English title on the title page. It is one of the best recordings of the Czech Christmas Mass, with great Josef Veselka as choirmaster.--Vejvančický (talk) 18:35, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Hello Hrdinský. Hudec seems to be less known person in the context of Czech music, I didn't find his entry in major Czech music dictionaries (I didn't check everything yet). However, he has a list of works at the website of the Czech Music Fund, and I found his Czech profile in the notes section (No. 27) of a thesis created by a student of the Department of Musicology of the Masaryk University Brno. I consider this as a reliable source, but I'm not sure if this composer meets notability criteria here on Wikipedia. List of compositions for viola F-K and H. J. Foss

Would you be willing to check your source for your entry on Hubert James Foss? I have been doing a research project on Foss, and all my available sources show that "Three Airs for Two Players" was written by Foss and published by Oxford for violin, not viola, with piano accompaniment. I know of no reason why the music could not be played on the viola - the music was intended to be easy enough for young violinists and pianists and they're in range (although written in G-clef) - but they were not intended for viola. Hey, Hrdinský. Well, you've done a great job as far as I can tell. I found exactly 1 definite Russian spelling error, and one other that you could easily get away with (трёх vs. трех). I made a few other minor tweakettes, but consider them specks of dust on an otherwise brilliant jewel. The most consistent "error", if we can use that term, is italicising standard titles such as Mazurka, Serenade, and so on. Hi. Thanks for adding the diacritics to the singers on the recording. I just cut and pasted it from somewhere without thinking. If you have a moment, could you see whether I've got the right diacritics in the right places in the Roles table - the Wexford programme, which I'm using, is a little unreliable, e.g. Winkler instead of Winckler. Also, I managed to dredge up the name of the conductor and three singers from the PDF document (? a Ph D thesis?) which I referenced. As my knowledge of Czech is close to zero, give or take a few words from Czech operas ("S podmínkou" = "But on one condition"), I hope I've got those right. Do you know of a source for any more role-creators other than those three? I couldn't see anything very obvious elsewhere in that document. Any other comments or amendments welcome! Hello Hrdinský. I attempted to expand this article. The information is not complete or perfect, but I hope my addition is helpful. Please, check out the grammar/spelling and ask me for clarification if needed. I have not much to add to Theodor Schaefer, the article says basically the same as his entry in Czechoslovak Music Dictionary. The list of works is detailed and correct (your usual standard class :). Good work, thank you. Btw, I noticed that you called Janáček a Moravian composer, and I'm not sure whether you have noticed a recent discussion at Janáček's talk page. I have no problem with calling him a "Moravian" (because he was a "Moravian"), however, it seems that Janáček considered himself a Czech composer, as well as consider him the most authoritative sources of the Czech and world musicology. A few days ago I met Prof. Miloš Štědroň (a foremost Czech/Moravian expert on Janáček and his works) and I asked him for his opinion on the Czech/Moravian question. In a long and interesting "lecture", he explained that during Janáček's life the Czech vs. Moravian nationality or self-determination was not so important, as the young Czechoslovak state fought to define its identity under the German influence. To me it seems that the whole Czech/Moravian rivalry started with a big intensity after the Velvet Revolution and following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. The Moravian movement was really strong in the early 1990s, and today is weaken. However, some of my good Moravian compatriots still feel oppressed by the evil Czechs (personified mainly by the inhabitants of Prague) and they need to fight for their nation on all fronts. Thanks for more work on more works. I have a question regarding the translation of titles. So far I understood (from the Bach cantatas) that if the translation of a title is also a title, like in famous operas, it's treated as such, italic and capitalized. If it's only a translation helping to understand, it's not italic and not capitalized. Thanks for answering. As for the Bach cantatas, as Bach didn't give them titles, they go by what happens to be the first line of the text. This is rendered italic because it's kind of a title after all. It is not capitalized any different because German doesn't do that. But the project agreed that a translation to English (and there is always more than one) should not be treated like a title, no italic, no capitalization. Now I wonder about things like "song cycle" versus "Song Cycle", but am not fanatic about it, just wanted to learn. And did, thanks, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:17, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Swan Hennessy

Thank you for your work on Swan Hennessy. I have done some research on him, too, that I will incorporate at some point, already did a little today. I would like to change one thing, if you agree. I find the long table of works helpful in terms of content, but very awkward in terms of the space it needs. Most composers articles feature work-lists as a simple list, subdivided by genre. The genre division makes a column for instrumentation unnecessary, for instance. And I agree with the writer of the note above on Rebecca Clarke that information on publishers is essential for both musicologists and musicians. That is missing in your table. Saint-Saens Op.62

I have seen it listed as "in G major" as well. A quick check of Saint-Saëns' score reveals that the key is E minor.

The first note of the piece is E, the second is D-sharp (the leading tone of E minor). Although the opening Largamente is harmonically ambiguous, the first cadence in E minor is bar 10 of the Allegro section. Bar 48 cadences in B major, the dominant of E minor. The first G major chord (not in root position) is in bar 60 at Lusingando poco rubato. The secondary them at bar 96 is in G major, but 22 bars later, Saint-Saëns has returned to E minor. He plays around with the relative major several times as he develops the themes. A dominant cadence (B major) at bar 230 leads us to a key change to E major with the secondary theme and closing section in the parallel major. Best regards, Hrdinský ^〒 23:42, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

List of compositions for viola F-H: Kenneth Harding

Dear Hrdinský, Thank you for your great articles and contributions. Would it be possible to amend one of the entries in Kenneth Harding's list of compositions? There is no work titled 'Green Apples' by Kenneth Harding. The confusion originated when Frank Stiles (violist/composer) titled Moonlit Apples wrongly as Green Apples. This was picked up by The Seventh Catalogue of Contemporary Welsh Music, compiled by Robert Smith : The Guild for the Promotion of Welsh Music (1981). Further, Moonlit Apples is listed in Philip Clark's catalogue (Welsh Music 1, no. 6 (1991): 17–18) as having been composed in 1985, but the manuscript bears the date of March 1979. Finally, the Wikipedia entry further confuses the issue by listing both Moonlit Apples (supplying Clark's incorrect dating of 1985) and the fictitious work, Green Apples, with a date of 1979. So, in essence, would it be possible to remove the Green Apples entry and re-date the Moonlit Apples (named after John Drinkwater's poem of the same name) as 1979. Many thanks.
