Matt Igor McKenna is a former amateur swimmer who swam for the Gettysburg College Bullets for four years (1991-1995). During this period, McKenna received three national swimming All America selections, and he earned back-to-back Most Outstanding Performer Awards in conference. McKenna also set five school records in swimming. His school records set in the backstroke lasted for fifteen years.

In 1993, the Middle Atlantic Conference awarded McKenna their Most Outstanding Performer Award after he set conference records in six swimming events.

Early Life and Education[edit]

McKenna grew up in Chatham Township, New Jersey. He graduated from Morristown-Beard School in Morristown, NJ in 1991. The school inducted him into its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. [1]

After his high school studies, McKenna completed his bachelor's degree in sociology at Gettysburg College in 1995. Gettysburg College inducted him into their Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. McKenna received his master's degree from Smith College. [2]

A native of Chatham Township, N.J. and graduate of Morristown-Beard High School, McKenna was an 18-time conference champion and three-time All-American with the Bullets. He was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Most Outstanding Performer in 1993 after setting conference records in six events. In Gettysburg’s first years a member of the Centennial Conference in 1993-94, McKenna claimed Most Outstanding Performer accolades once again and qualified for the national championships. He earned his first All-America certificate by placing 13th at the NCAA Division III meet. McKenna capped his career by leading Gettysburg to its fourth consecutive conference title in 1994-95. He qualified for the national meet once again and placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke, becoming the first individual All-American in swimming at Gettysburg in 16 years. He also claimed national recognition in the 200 backstroke with a 10th-place showing. At the time of his graduation in 1995, McKenna held five school records, including the 100 back (52.15) and 200 back (1:53.15). His backstroke records stood for 15 years. McKenna earned a degree in anthropology from Gettysburg in 1995. He recently earned his master’s from Simons College and currently works as a middle school teacher in Medford, Mass."
