Seedlip is a brand of non-alcoholic spirit produced by Ben Branson at the Chiltern Hills distillery, Northwest of London. It was launched in 2015. Seedlip are the first brand of distilled non-alcoholic spirits. Branson created Seedlip to capture a niche market of people wanting the taste of spirits, without the alcohol content; “What to drink when you’re not drinking.”[1] Since the company’s launch in 2015, Seeplip has produced three non-alcoholic spirits named Spice 94, Garden 108, and Grove 42. Each non-alcoholic spirit has a distinctive botanical flavour which has been sourced from Ben Branson’s family farm in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom. [2]British multinational company Diageo, invested in Seedlip as part of their Distill Venture program in 2016. [3] Seedlip has received awards including the Best Emerging Brand and Best Launch in the Drinks Business at the British Luxury Awards in 2017. [4]

History[edit]

Seedlip, “The World’s First Distilled Non-alcoholic Spirits” was created by Ben Branson 2015.[2] Branson is a descendant from a 300-year-old Lincolnshire farming family. He grew up loving the outdoors which lead Ben Branson growing his own ingredients. [1]After a poor experience with (find quote about fruity mocktail or just use non-alcoholic beverage) at a London restaurant in 2013, Branson decided to combine his farming heritage with the idea of “What to drink when you’re Not drinking”. [5]

On 13 November 2013, Branson he bought a small copper still and for the next two years experimented with the distillation process using herbs, spices and vegetables from the Branson farmland. [1],[6]Branson used a scanned copy of John French’s, 1651 text, The Art of Distillation, a book documenting methods and recipes for distilling non-alcoholic spirits. (In the 17th century, physicians distilled non-alcoholic herbal remedies using copper stills, a common form of alchemy in order to cure diseases). [7]

In late 2015 Branson created the first Seedlip product; Spice 94. Spice 94 proved successful, its first 1000 bottles distributed to Selfridges selling out within three weeks, the second three days and the third less than half an hour. [1]Branson went on to develop two other non-alcoholic spirits, Garden 108 and Grove 42.

In June 2016, Diageo became minority investor of Seedlip as part of their Distill Ventures program. The program is an initiative to by the company to support entrepreneurs in the launch of their drinks brand. Seedlip is headquartered and distilled on a farm in the Chiltern Hills, Northwest of London. [1]

Creation and Distillation Process[edit]

Seedlip is distilled at its headquarters in the Chiltern Hills. Although it is a non-alcoholic spirit, the distillation process is very similar to alcoholic spirits. Seedlip products undergo the processes of maceration, distillation, filtration and blending, but it does not go through fermentation like that of most spirits. [8]The production of a bottle of Seedlip takes 152 days, from start to finish. The ingredients are planted at the Branson farm in March of each year when the soil is at the optimum temperature. At the end of June the ingredients are harvested. The produce is frozen within 90 minutes in 10kg boxes and sent to the distillery for the six-week distillation process to begin. [7]

The individual plants a macerated with a neutral grain spirit and water at specific ratios for a specific amounts of time to create a wash. [5] The wash is then distilled in copper pots twice to concentrate the flavour and remove the alcohol. Due to the ratios used in the steeping process, the wash has a lower alcohol (ethanol) content than that required for liquor distillation. Ethanol boils at 78 degrees Celsius verses water’s boiling temperature of 100 degrees Celcius. [6]Once the mixture starts to boil the alcohol will burn off first. The remaining concentrated distillate is blended with other distillates to create the flavour profile of each Seedlip product (i.e. Seedlip Garden 108 has pea, thyme, rosemary, hay, spearmint and hops distillate mixed together). The blend is then micro sterile filtered where it is then bottled in the North of England.

Product Information[edit]

Seedlip’s first non-alcoholic spirit, Seedlip Spice 94, was launched in 2015, followed by Garden 108 then Grove 42. All non-alcoholic spirits produced by Seedlip are contain zero calories, no added sugar and use potassium sorbate and citric acid as natural preservatives . [9] Seedlip does not classify as a non-alcoholic gin as it does not contain juniper, a core ingredient which is legally required to label a product as gin. [7]

Spice 94[edit]

94’ refers to the year Christopher Columbus discovered All spice berries in Jamaica. [7]It has a flavour profile of grapefruit zest, lemon zest, Allspice berries, cardamom, oak bark and cascarilla bark. [1]

Garden 108[edit]

108’ refers to the average number of days its takes to sow, grow and harvest the sugar snap peas. [7] It has a flavour profile of common English, home grown herbs, and possesses notes of thyme, rosemary, hay, peas, spearmint and hops. [1]

Grove 42[edit]

42’ refers to the year 1542 when the colour orange was first used to describe the colour as well as the fruit. [7] Grove 42 has a flavour profile of the bitter elements of orange, mandarin and blood orange. [4]It also contains hints of lemon, ginger and lemongrass.
