PRFI Ltd. is a UK design consultancy with expertise in the design and development of integrated circuits and modules at microwave and millimetre-wave (mmWave) frequencies. It specialises in designing integrated circuits (ICs) for applications like 5G mobile communications, and many Tier 1 5G vendors including Huawei and Samsung have used its design services. Its designs are also used in applications that include satellite communications, test instrumentation, defence, and line of sight radio links, with customers including Inmarsat, Qorvo and Analog Devices.

History[edit]

The company began as the RF integration operation of Plextek, an independent consultancy in Great Chesterford, UK. In 2012 it became Plextek RF Integration, part of the Plextek group of companies, which also includes Telensa, Blighter Surveillance Systems and Redtail Telematics, as well as Plextek Services Ltd. It was demerged into a separate limited company, called Plextek RFI Limited, in 2015.

In March 2020 Plextek RFI was acquired by CML Microsystems Plc[1], but remained as a separate UK limited company, changing its name to PRFI in July 2020.[2]

The company has designed over 100 custom ICs at frequencies ranging from baseband to 100GHz. It is an approved third party design house for Wolfspeed (part of Cree)[3], GCS LLC[4], Qorvo (formerly TriQuint)[5] and WIN Semiconductor. [6]

Services[edit]

PRFI provides design services to develop Radio Frequency Integrated Circuits (RFICs), Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) and hybrid microwave and mmWave modules.

Technology[edit]

PRFI's microwave and mmWave module development technology capability includes conventional SMT on laminate substrates, High Density Interconnect (HDI), chip and wire, thin film, thick film and LTCC. It has in-house facilities for both RF-on-wafer (RFOW) test of bare semiconductor die and testing of SMT packaged components.[7]

A number of PRFI's engineers are "Keysight certified experts" [8], recognising their expertise in the use of the Keysight Pathwave ADS EDA software.
