Song

Nobody's Business is a song recorded by Barbadian artist Rihanna, from her seventh studioalbum Unapologetic. It was released on November 19th, 2012 by Def Jam Recordings. It featured guest vocals by Chris Brown. It was co-written by The-Dream, Rihanna herself and Carlos McKinney.[1] The song incorporates lyrics from Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel"

Background

[edit]

Rihanna began "working on the new sound" for her seventh studio album in March 2012, even though she had not yet begun recording.[2] On September 12, 2012, Def Jam France announced via Twitter that Rihanna would release a new single the upcoming week while her seventh studio album was scheduled to be released in November 2012. However, the tweet was quickly deleted and replaced with another clarifying that more information would be available the next day (September 13).[3] Via her official Twitter account, Rihanna posted a series of "teasing" tweets announcing her seventh studio album.[4] On October 11, 2012, in one of her tweets revealed that the title of her new album is Unapologetic alongside with its cover.[5]

The song is somewhat controversial to the public because Chris Brown is featured in it. In 2009, Brown assaulted Rihanna after a pre Grammy party and police reports were filed on the incident. Photos were released of the battered Rihanna and have since been banned from being shared. This is the third song put out by the two after the alleged incident. The two prior songs include Birthday Cake (song) Remix and the Turn Up the Music (song) Remix. The reason Nobody's Business is so controversial is because the public is in shock that these two celebrities are still in contact despite what happened between them years ago and even the small things that have happened in the recent past. For instance, Brown was accused of getting a tattoo on his neck of what resembled the banned photo of Rihanna after he beat her.

The song focuses on her relationship with Chris Brown as it appears. The track starts off and and Rihanna begins to boast, “You’ll always be mine. Sing it to the world. You’ll always be my boy. I’ll always be your girl. Ain’t nobody’s business, but mine and my baby.” Throughout the song both Brown and Rihanna put their relationship on blast and are unapologetic about it.

Composition

[edit]

Nobody's Business includes house and Chicago stepping styles, and a Four on the floor kick drum.[6] The tempo is set in one hundred and ten beats per minute. Written in the key of C minor, Nobody's Business follows the chord progression A-A-Cm-C. [7] The song is performed in mid tempo. Vocals by Rihanna in the verses are often more spoken than sung. In the chorus, she focuses more on singing. Chris Brown is predominately sings and provides back-up vocals for Rihanna towards the end of the song.

Critical Response

[edit]

The song in general garnered mostly positive/mixed reviews. Vulture (blog) painstakingly raves that, "The song leaked today and of course it had to be like really good." The Chicago Tribune writer Greg Kot was unsure about the tracking saying that, "This dysfunctional couple has turned the track into a sick marketing ploy. You can even dance to it! The production casts the song in strings, piano and a four-on-the-floor kick drum, a canny merger of Chicago stepping music and golden-age house." In addition, Rolling Stone seemed to have the song in it's good graces when it wrote that, The bouncing, funky cut is set to appear on Rihanna's upcoming record, Unapologetic. It finds Brown and Rihanna trading amorous dedications, including 'Let's make out in this Lexus/ There's no other love like this'" Daniel Kreps of Spin Magazine gives a great in depth background look at the song and then goes on to say that it is, "too infectious to ignore." He also says that, "This is the closest Rihanna has come to sounding like the King of Pop in her industrious career.

Diamonds World Tour

[edit]

The tour attached with this song was the Diamonds World Tour. This tour marks Rihanna’s 4th worldwide tour in her 7 year long career. It began on March 8th of 2013 and runs through November 15th 2013The tour went a number of places including North America, Europe, Australia, the Middle East and New Zealand This tour was in such high demand that additional dates had to be added in Montreal, Toronto, and New York City in order to accommodate the requests.

Interviews

[edit]

The song Nobody’s business peaked interest in the media’s eyes and eventually led to various interviews about the content of the song. In a Fuse interview, [8] Rihanna states that the song is “the way she looks at everything regarding her personal life.” So while the song may include Chris Brown, he may not be the main reason that the song was written. She says also says that even though her life is captured through camera lenses every day, her life is still hers. Even though Rihanna did play a part in writing the song, The-Dream was the leader of the writing portion. Tyran "Ty Ty" Smith, who is an exec at Rocnation says that when The-Dream was writing this song, he didn’t have it in mind for it to be a duet with Chris Brown. He says that in actuality, it was Jay Z who suggested that it be a duet between the two after hearing the song. [9]
