Don Bucefalo[edit]

Don Bucefalo is a three-act Italian opera (Dramma giocoso) composed by Antonio Cagnoni to a libretto by Callisto Bassi. It was first performed at the Milan Conservatory on 28 June 1847.

Tchaikovsky[edit]

In mid 1877, the singer Yelizaveta Lavrovskaya suggested to Tchaikovsky that Alexander Pushkin's verse novel Eugene Onegin might be a suitable subject for an opera. After reading the novel during a sleepless night, the composer produced a scenario and approached his friend Konstantin Shilovsky, who agreed to help with the libretto. They retained as much as possible of Pushkin's verses, but only the first four scenes were completed before Tchaikovsky's disastrous marriage. The rest of the opera was composed during his subsequent recuperation in Switzerland and Italy, and it was completed at the end of January 1878. The premiere (performed by students of the Moscow Conservatory and conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein) took place at the Maly Theatre (Moscow), in March 1879, and the professional premiere followed at the Bolshoi in January 1881. Operas[edit]

Throughout his career, Tchaikovsky composed operas. He spent more time on them than on any other genre, and most of them were produced fairly soon after they were completed. His early operas, The Voyevoda (1867-8) and Undina (1869) were unsuccessful, but The Oprichnik (1870-2), with its pronounced "Russianness" was a success.[1] Tchaikovsky had decided to write its libretto himself, modelling his dramatic technique on that of Eugène Scribe, and he continued to contribute to the librettos of most of his operas for the next twenty years.[2] Vakula the Smith (1874) enjoyed only a lukewarm reception, but its folksongs and folksong pastiches drew Tchaikovsky closer to his nationalist contemporaries.[3]

Three of his remaining seven operas were based on works by Alexander Pushkin. The first, Eugene Onegin (1878)
