Stephen ("Steve") G Cecchetti was born in Berkeley, California, in 1956.

Career[edit]

Bank for International Settlements (2008- November 2013)[edit]

Stephen G Cecchetti became the cheif economist of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in July 2008 where his official title was Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department. He was appointed by the Board of Directors of the BIS and, reporting to the General Manager, Jaime Caruana, was a member of the Executive Committe of the BIS.[1] His principal fields of interest are macroeconomics, monetary economics, financial economics, monetary policy, central banking, and the supply of money. His dissertation (PhD, 1981) covered inflation. His more recent contributions to academic research have focused on the role of debt and finance in growth, and a improving the resilience of the financial system.

While at the BIS, he managed the research, statistics and publications produced by the BIS. This has included the preparation of the meetings of central bank governors of the world's largest economies, who gather at the BIS every two months. Various committees of central bankers and financial supervisors are based at the BIS, and as Head of the Department, it was his esponsibility to oversee their activities. Most prominent in this last group is the Basel Committee for Banking Supervision, which sets international standards for bank regulation and supervision.

Brandeis University (2003 - 2008; 2013-)[edit]

Mr Ceccehtti was the Barbara and Richard M Rosenberg Professor of Global Finance at the Brandeis International Business School. At that time he also published a textbook entitled Money, Banking and Financial Markets.[2]
To undergraduates, he taught a course in Money and Banking that was based on the textbook. The purpose of this course was to make students conversant in the language of financial markets and institutions, including providing an understanding of money; financial instrument, including bonds, stocks, and foreign exchange; financial markets, including stock markets; the role of financial institutions in our economy; and the importance of central banks.
To masters students he taught a course entitled “The Global Economic Environment”, covering topics such as globalization, the interconnection of markets, he theory of trade, foreign investment, capital flows, capital markets, the mechanics of foreign exchange rates, and the changing institutional arrangements governing these relationships. In the winter of 2013 he returned to Brandeis University Business School as a tenured professor,[3] where he will be teaching "Banking, Central Banking, and the International Finance System".[4]

Earlier academic career[edit]

Before teaching at Brandeis, Mr Cecchetti was a Professor at the Department of Economics, Ohio State University, 1992-2002.[5] Earlier - and parallel - academic positions included: Visiting Scholar, Nuffield College, Oxford University, September – December 2001; Visiting Professor, Department of Economics, University of Melbourne, June-July 1996; Visiting Professor, Department of Economics, Boston College, 1994-95; Visiting Professor, Department of Economics, Princeton University, 1992-93; Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Ohio State University, 1989-92; Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Ohio State University, 1987-89; Assistant Professor of Economics, Graduate School of Business Administration, New York University, 1982-87; Research Fellow, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California, Berkeley, July 1984 and August 1986.[5]

Other empployment and Public sector[6][edit]

For a two year period, from August 1997 to September 1999, Mr Cecchetti was Executive Vice President and Director of Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Earlier, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City (Winter-Spring 1986), and a Research Economist at the National Commission for Employment Policy, Washington, D.C., Summer 1981).
In preparation of his PhD, he also held a position as Junior Economist at the Council of Economic Advisers (1979-80).

Publications[edit]

In addition to a textbook (alongside with Kermit Schoenholtz) entitled Money, Banking and Financial Markets, now in its fourth edition, Professor Cecchetti has authored numerous articles on macroeconomics and monetary policy. His extensive list of publications can be found, for instance, at Google Scholar[7] or at IDEAS/RePec[8].
Furthermore, his many publications and speeches from his time at the BIS are listed on his "author" page on the BIS website.[9] He has been a regular contributor to the Financial Times and is a founding contributor of VOX, a policy portal.
Furthermore, he is editor of the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking.
