Horatio Gordon Hutchinson (16 May 1859 - 29 July 1932) was an English amateur golfer, author, and lawyer. He was a man of considerable achievements, with interests in cricket, shooting, and nature as well as golf. He also wrote a political novel. He began his golfing career at an early age playing at the Royal North Devon Golf Club. By the age of sixteen, he won the club medal championship and, by club rules, became it's Captain[2]. He was also a member of Royal Liverpool Golf Club, and became it's Captain by more conventional means in 1894[3], as well as becoming the first English Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews in 1908.[4]

Hutchinson's finest golf efforts occurred in the Amateur Championship, which he won in 1886 and 1887, thus becoming the first player to successfully defend the championship when he beat the great John Ball, Jr. on Ball's home course. He was also runner-up for the championship in 1885 and 1903.

Horace's strength in golf was his short game, and there have been few better putters in any period, especially given the playing conditions of his day. He also mastered hitting the ball low into the wind.

He had great influence in the game, especially through his books and prolific magazine writing. An ardent student of the golf swing, Hutchinson decided to put into writing his suggestions on how to play in his book, "Hints on Golf," published in 1886[5]. His manuscript was the first real effort to put on paper instructions on how to play the game, and Hutchinson can be considered the father of golf instruction. His book displayed his understanding of the golf swing and the golfer's psyche which was years ahead of it's time.

After this initial work, he became a prolific author, composing over 50 works on such varied subjects as: Golf, fishing, cricket, shooting, nature, biography, and philosophy.
