Wikipedia talk:Article titles#RfC on the use of dash-separated titles for sports events[edit]

The previous RFC on dash-separated titles for sports events ... that should actually go to Wikipedia talk:Article titles/Archive 60#RFC on dash-separated titles for sports events - please don't name your section the exact same thing as another section you're going to be referring to.

Anyway, that was a close debate but User:Chess closed that dashes should be allowed but no consensus on format. I'm not going to count votes in that first RFC, and will take Chess's judgment on that, stare decisis, barring a clear consensus otherwise here.

Question 1: permitting dash-separated titles for sports events[edit]

  • Agree/Support: Thryduulf, Fyunck(click), Joseph2302, Adamtt9, CapnJackSp, Amakuru, DGG, Tony = 8
  • Disagree/Oppose: Wjemather, SmokeyJoe, Dicklyon, GraemeLeggett, SMcCandlish, Cinderella157 = 6

Slight majority to Agree, but the key point is that there isn't an overwhelming majority to overrule the former RFC's consensus.

The arguments are more important than the count, but the main arguments for is that it's a clearer or perfectly natural way of writing article titles, the arguments against is that it's unnatural, not how sources refer to these topics. Those seem to balance out, honestly; I don't see many or even any citations of sources for how these events are usually titled, or any other evidence, just assertions. Then there is the argument whether or not the status quo suffices, which we have disagreement of what that would be, and one example of which was met with strong opposition. Without evidence all these seem to be just a matter of personal taste.

So, again or still, as per the last RFC, dash-separated titles for sports events are permitted.

Question 2: ordering in a dash-separated title for sports events[edit]

I have to say the phrasing of this question is biased. First, as Sportsfan77777 observed, it's not at all clear that there is any difference in article-subarticle between options 1 and 2, so that shouldn't have been taken for granted in the phrasing of the question. Second, as Fyunck(click) observed, using a dash doesn't mean we are limited to just the 2 choices in options 1 and 2. Anyway:

  • Option 1: 2014 US Open – Men's Singles : SMcCandlish, CapnJackSp, DGG
  • Option 2: Men's Singles – 2014 US Open: Cinderella157,
  • Option 3: does not prescribe format: Thryduulf, Fyunck(click), Amakuru

though Fyunck(click) is against option 2 and Amakuru seems to prefer option 1 in most cases.

So definitely consensus against mandating option 2, and a split decision between option 1 and being flexible.

Question 3: amending WP:AT[edit]

This saw much less participation, Oppose from SMcCandlish and Amakuru, Support from Cinderella157 - no change.
