Footnotes[edit]

  1. Won vacant championship title.
  2. Voluntarily relinquished championship title.
  3. Championship recognition withdrawn by sanctioning organization.
  4. On October 29, 1877, Tom Allen defeated Tompkin Gilbert over seven rounds at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London in a bout billed as for "the World Heavyweight Championship under Marquess of Queensberry Rules. Allen would box twice more over the next eighteen months, but would not press a championship claim.
  5. On February 7, 1882, Sullivan defeated Paddy Ryan to win the championship of America under London Prize Ring Rules. A lack of legitimate challengers elsewhere gradually resulted in Sullivan gaining worldwide recognition. On August 29, 1885, he defeated Dominick McCaffrey in a bout promoted as "the Marquess of Queensberry glove contest for the Championship of the World." Over his remaining career Sullivan would fight under both sets of rules, defending his London Prize Ring Rules title twice before facing James J. Corbett in his first defense of the modern, Marquess of Queensberry Rules title.
  6. Corbett announced a retirement from boxing in 1895, and nominated Steve O'Donnell to succeed him as Heavyweight Champion. O'Donnell was matched against Peter Maher on November 11, 1895 at Maspeth, New York. Maher won via first round knockout, but failed to achieve widespread championship acclaim and Maher himself expressed a desire to fight Corbett for the "real" title. In Maher's next bout on February 21, 1896, future Corbett conqueror Bob Fitzsimmons defeated him via first round knockout. Fitzsimmons, in turn, was defeated by "Sailor" Tom Sharkey on December 2, 1896 in a bout promoted as for the Heavyweight Championship. Corbett announced his return to the ring shortly after the Sharkey-Fitzsimmons bout, at which time the O'Donnell-Maher-Fitzsimmons-Sharkey championship lineage was essentially dismissed. Sharkey's title claims lapsed when he was defeated on May 6, 1898 by future champion James J. Jeffries.
  7. Britain's National Sporting Club withdrew its recognition of Johnson as champion for refusing a title challenge by British champion William "Iron" Hague. The NSC matched Hague with Canadian Sam Langford for its title on May 24, 1909. Langford won via fourth round knockout, but never pursued a championship claim, instead seeking a championship bout against Johnson.
  8. Dempsey held public acclaim as champion throughout his reign. The National Boxing Association recognized Dempsey as their champion from its formation in 1921, and The Ring magazine similarly recognized Dempsey as Heavyweight Champion from its first issue, dated February 18, 1922. The New York State Athletic Commission, meanwhile, would not recognize Dempsey as World Champion until his victory over Jimmy Darcy on July 24, 1922.
  9. In a bout for the vacant championship, Schmeling was awarded victory over Jack Sharkey via disqualification due to fouls. The New York State Athletic Commission ordered Schmeling and Sharkey to face each other in an immediate rematch, an order which Schmeling ignored. The NYSAC subsequently withdrew recognition of Schmeling as champion, but the National Boxing Association retained its recognition, and it would be joined by the European-based International Boxing Union in recognizing Schmeling as champion. The NYSAC version of the world championship would remain vacant until the Schmeling-Sharkey rematch on June 21, 1932.
  10. In late 1934, the International Boxing Union ordered Baer to defend his title against European champion Pierre Charles of Belgium. Baer ignored the order, whereupon the IBU sanctioned a bout between Charles and American George Godfrey on October 2, 1935. Godfrey won the bout via decision over fifteen rounds, but never pressed a championship claim. The IBU would recognize James J. Braddock as champion following his victory over Baer.
  11. In May 1949, the International Boxing Union sanctioned a September 4, 1949 bout between British champion Bruce Woodcock and American Lee Savold for its championship. The National Boxing Association meanwhile sanctioned a June 22, 1949 bout between Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott for its vacant championship; and the New York State Athletic Commission opted to leave its title vacant. In August 1950 however, Woodcock would suffer injuries in an automobile accident, delaying the bout. Savold defeated Woodcock in four rounds for the vacant IBU title. On September 27, 1950, Charles would earn NYSAC championship recognition by defeating former champion Joe Louis. On June 15, 1951, Louis defeated Savold via sixth round knockout in a bout for the IBU championship. Despite this, the following day the organization announced it would recognize Ezzard Charles as champion rather than Louis.
  12. Patterson, light heavyweight champion Archie Moore and Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson were scheduled against each other in a three-man round-robin series to fill the Heavyweight Championship vacated by Marciano. Patterson defeated Jackson on June 8, 1956 in a championship eliminator, then went on to defeat Moore for the title on November 30, 1956. Moore subsequently withdrew from the series, whereupon Patterson fought (and defeated) Jackson a second time as his first title defense, on July 29, 1957.
  13. Following his victory in a rematch against former champion Floyd Patterson, Liston was recognized as Heavyweight Champion by the newly formed World Boxing Council. Among the original members of the WBC was the European Boxing Union, which had previously recognized world champions as the International Boxing Union.
  14. On June 19, 1964, the World Boxing Association withdrew its recognition of Ali for agreeing to an immediate rematch against former champion Sonny Liston, in violation of its rules. The New York State Athletic Commission and World Boxing Council continued to recognize Ali as champion, and on February 6, 1967 Ali re-unified the titles by defeating Ernie Terrell, who succeeded Ali as the WBA's champion. On April 29, 1967, Ali's recognition as champion would be universally withdrawn following his refusal to be inducted into the United States Army subsequent to his conscription.
  15. The World Boxing Association orchestrated a single-elimination championship tournament involving eight of its ranked contenders: Oscar Bonavena, Jimmy Ellis, Leotis Martin, Karl Mildenberger, two-time former champion Floyd Patterson, Jerry Quarry, Thad Spencer, and former WBA champion Ernie Terrell. Joe Frazier, at the time the WBA's No. 2 ranked contender, declined to participate. In first round matches, Ellis defeated Martin, Quarry defeated Patterson, Spencer defeated Terrell, and Bonavena defeated Mildenberger. In semi-final matches, Ellis defeated Bonavena while Quarry defeated Spencer. Ellis defeated Quarry via majority decision to win the vacant WBA title. Frazier, meanwhile, was matched against Buster Mathis for a championship initially recognized by the New York State Athletic Commission as well as those of Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Similar "world" championship recognition was bestowed upon him by the Texas Athletic Commission following a victory over Dave Zyglewicz on April 22, 1969. As a member of the World Boxing Council, the New York State Athletic Commission ceased recognizing Heavyweight Champions, subsuming its recognition to that of the WBC beginning with the February 16, 1970 unification bout between Frazier and Ellis. Frazier subsequently earned universal championship recognition by defeating Muhammad Ali on March 8, 1971.
  16. Upon withdrawing championship recognition from Leon Spinks, the World Boxing Council immediately recognized Ken Norton as champion, based on his victory over Jimmy Young in a 'title eliminator' bout on November 5, 1977. Norton was obligated to face WBC mandatory challenger Larry Holmes within 120 days.
  17. Holmes relinquished the World Boxing Council title, the result of a dispute with the organization involving a scheduled (but never consummated) defense against future WBA champion Greg Page. Holmes was then immediately recognized as the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion of the newly organized International Boxing Federation.
  18. During 1986-87, HBO Sports staged a "Heavyweight Unification Series" unifying the IBF, WBA and WBC titles. Initially envisioned as an eight man, single-elimination tournament, due to contractual and other complications with its contestants, ultimately the series comprised ten bouts featuring eleven boxers (then-current IBF champion Michael Spinks, WBA champion Tim Witherspoon and WBC champion Trevor Berbick, former champions Larry Holmes and Pinklon Thomas, future champions Frank Bruno, James "Buster" Douglas, James "Bonecrusher" Smith, Tony Tucker and Mike Tyson, as well as Steffen Tangstad.) Seven of these bouts would result in a change in championship recognition by one or more of the sanctioning organizations, culminating with Mike Tyson unifying the titles by defeating Tony Tucker. Despite this however, Tyson did not earn universal recognition as former IBF (and lineal) champion Michael Spinks had withdrawn from the event. Tyson ultimately would earn universal recognition by defeating Spinks on June 27, 1988.
  19. Inaugural champion of the newly formed World Boxing Organization.
  20. Upon withdrawing championship recognition from Riddick Bowe, the World Boxing Council immediately recognized Lennox Lewis as champion, based on his victory over Donovan "Razor" Ruddock in a 'title eliminator' bout on October 31, 1992. Lewis was obligated to face former IBF champion and WBC mandatory challenger Tony Tucker within 120 days.
  21. Botha defeated Axel Schulz for the vacant IBF championship, but in January 1996 the official bout result was changed to a 'no contest' after Botha's post-fight drug test revealed he had taken nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. On March 27, 1996, the organization withdrew its recognition of Botha as champion and ordered Schulz to face former champion Michael Moorer for the again vacated title.
  22. The World Boxing Council refused to sanction Tyson's September 7, 1996 bout against WBA champion Bruce Seldon for its title, having previously mandated that, per its rules, Tyson was obligated to face former champion Lennox Lewis in a mandatory defense. Following the bout Lewis filed suit against Tyson and the WBC, seeking a court order requiring Tyson to face Lewis in the ring. In settlement of the suit, on September 24, 1996 Tyson relinquished the WBC title, and he pursued a bout against Evander Holyfield instead.
  23. In the seven years prior to awarding its vacant championship to the winner of the Lewis-Holyfield rematch, the International Boxing Organization had recognized five champions (Pinklon Thomas, Lionel Butler, Danell Nicholson, Jimmy Thunder and Brian Nielsen). The IBO title having nominal public credibility to that point, details regarding the reigns of pre-Lewis IBO titleholders are omitted from this list. Since Lewis, all IBO titleholders have simultaneously been recognized by at least one other organization.
  24. Upon defeating Ruiz, Jones was simultaneously recognized as champion by the WBA in both the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions. Under its rules, Jones was required to relinquish one of the titles within ten days, but at his request the organization suspended this rule. Months later and with his consent, the WBA designated Jones its "Champion in Recess," whereupon it sanctioned a December 13, 2003 bout between former champions John Ruiz and Hasim Rahman for its "interim" championship. Ruiz won the bout, and would be elevated from "interim champion" when Jones ultimately chose to resume boxing at light heavyweight, relinquishing the heavyweight title.
  25. Toney defeated John Ruiz to win the World Boxing Association championship, but ten days later the official bout result was changed to a 'no contest' after Toney's post-fight drug test revealed he had taken nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. Under WBA Championship rule 18:23, "If the challenger wins the championship and his antidrug test is positive and the losing champion has a negative result, then the Champion shall regain his title in spite of the loss, and the Challenger shall be disqualified..." Upon disclosure of the test result the WBA immediately withdrew its recognition of Toney, reinstating Ruiz as its Heavyweight Champion.
  26. Following repeated injury, the World Boxing Council designated Klitschko its "Champion in Recess," and sanctioned an August 13, 2005 bout between Monte Barrett and former champion Hasim Rahman for its "interim" championship. Rahman won the bout and Klitschko subsequently relinquished the title, at which point Rahman was elevated from "interim champion."
  27. During Haye's reign, the World Boxing Association altered its championship structure in all divisions, creating a new designation of "Super Champion." From that point, "Super Champion" status has been attributed to a WBA champion who is simultaneously recognized by at least one other sanctioning organization, while "World Champion" status (commonly referred to as a "Regular" champion) was subordinated to that of a "Super Champion." IBF/IBO/WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko would defeat Haye in a unification bout, whereupon he was designated the first WBA "Super Champion," whereupon Alexander Povetkin and former champion Ruslan Chagaev were then matched for the inaugural, subordinated version of the WBA "World" championship.
  28. Following repeated injury, the World Boxing Association designated Chagaev its "Champion in Recess." Chagaev was scheduled to face Nikolai Valuev on May 30, 2009, but withdrew from the bout upon contracting hepatitis. Concurrently, WBA "Super Champion" (and IBF, IBO and WBO champion) Wladimir Klitschko was scheduled to face David Haye on June 20, 2009, but Haye withdrew from the bout due to a back injury. Chagaev, now recovered, stepped in as Haye's replacement. Klitschko defeated Chagaev, whereupon the WBA withdrew Chagaev's "Champion in Recess" status.
  29. Browne defeated Ruslan Chagaev to win the World Boxing Association "World" (regular) championship, but Browne's post-fight drug test revealed he had taken clenbuterol, a banned substance. Under WBA championship rule 18:23, the organization immediately withdrew its recognition of Browne, reinstating Chagaev as its "World" champion. Chagaev would relinquish this title three months later.
  30. On January 29, 2021, the World Boxing Association designated Charr its Heavyweight "Champion in Recess." Then-interim champion Trevor Bryan was immediately matched with former champion Bermane Stiverne for the now-vacant "World" championship title. Bryan won the bout, and with it the WBA "World" championship.
