Profile of M H Koya
Son of a farming parents, Hanif Koya grew up in the rural Rifle Range village in Lautoka Fiji and obtained his elementary education at the famous Methodist Boys (later Methodist Mission) School.
An above average student, Koya seemingly lost his focus in the final years and ended up attending Muslim High School while some of his peers and cousins got selected for the more prestigious Natabua High School.
During his studentship at Lautoka Muslim High School, Koya was elected as form prefect for three successive years an experience that would mould in him leadership qualities.
After three years at the high school, Koya dropped out and opted to work at the family
law firm of Koya & Company temporarily.
In 1965, Koya joined the Lautoka Muslim Primary School as a licensed school teacher, a position he liked and enjoyed most.
Due to religious differences, the Muslim League dismissed Koya and one of his closest friends Master Hussain. Koya pursued a clerical career in the private industry first with Popular Furniture Limited and later with Reddy Construction company. With an early marriage, Koya felt that he will be soon facing severe challenges in life as most of his cousins were making headways with higher education and better jobs.
In this book, Koya reveals how he overcame the challenges and embarked on a very exciting and rewarding police career which he had to cut short due disparities with the Colonial “old boys” especially on account of someone he refers to as WILD CARD
In the second year of his police his career, Koya was selected as a Commissioner’s Cadet ( the highest honor for a subordinate officer ) for accelerated promotions due to his superb investigative and report writing skills.
At the time of this writing, Koya is a California resident where he studied criminal justice at Sacramento City College and continued his independent studies on-line to finish his degrees. He is a Superior Court Attend at the Hayward Hall if Justice.
Once selected for Community Peace Officer by Sacramento City, Koya declined to accept the position. Over the years, Koya tested several times for police jobs obtaining in access 90 % scores but never got a police job.
Now in his fifties Koya owns Fiji Sun Services providing legal analyst and notary public services and has been publishing The Fiji Sun, first Fiji Newspaper in the US.
Koya founded The Fiji Institute of Management back home in 1983 and in the US played key role in establishing, American Institute of Management, American Public Speakers Forum, World Press Council, Royal Fiji Police Institute, Fiji American Trade Council, The Muslim Writers Guild. He was first in organizing The Miss Fiji USA,
Koya hails from the famous Koya family of Fiji. His late mother was a younger sister of Late Hon. S M Koya , former Leader of Opposition and Fiji’s top criminal attorney.
