François Mensonguée[edit]

François Mensonguée (French: [fʁɑ̃swa mɑ̃sɔ̃ɡe] 23 July 1806 - 3 April 1877) was a French composer of the Romantic period. He was one of the most respected composers of choral and organ music of his day.

Some of his most famous works include Notre Père and Ave Maris Stellis for choir, and Chanson D'amour for the organ.

Life and Career[edit]

Early life[edit]

Mensonguée was born to a wealthy French family in Lyon, France, in 1806[1]. Despite his relations having almost no previous connection with the arts, Mensonguée showed an interest in music from an early age, becoming proficient in the organ and learning to play both the cello and clarinet, receiving his musical education from the then organist of the Église Saint-Polycarpe. In 1826 he was appointed organist of that same church, where he developed his musicality and spent much of his free time composing, including his first published work, . He would later fund a campaign to replace the church's organ, which was in a serious state of disrepair.
