María de los Ángeles Rozalén Ortuño (Letur, Albacete, Spain, June 12 of 1986), artistically known as Rozalén, is a spanish singer-songwriter and composer. To this day, she has three edited works under the tittle Con derecho a..., Quién me ha visto... y Cuando el río suena...

She is an importat social activist who defends the rights of minorities and the most marginalised communities through her music.

Biography[edit]

She grew in Letur, a little village in 'Sierra del Segura', the town of her mother. However, her father comes from another village, Balazote. Since she was a child, Maria Rozalén sang the songs which her mother and her grandmother sang to her, she recited poetry and she attended dancing classes. Since she was 7, she belonged to a 'rondalla' (a tipically spanish group of serenaders) in the neighbourhood of Fátima of Albacete. She belonged to it as guitar and mandolin instrumentalist for 9 years, her first steps in music. Her first vocal activity was in the choir of th school 'Colegio Santo Ángel de la Guarda' and the church 'Iglesia de Fátima' in Albacete.

She started to write her own music and lyrics when she was 14, when her main motivation was the social criticism and, at the age of 16, she gave her first concert as singer-songwriter in the festival "Operación Bocata" of Albacete. Since then, her artistic career as singer-songwriter hasn't stopped. She performs usually with her great friend Tete Moragón and great percusionist such as the bass player Jorge Rodríguez and the boz player "El Cometilla", an artistic name. Nowadays, she also performs with the guitarrist Samuel Vidal. They perform in numerous localities along Spain.

She is always willing to perform because of benefic or events or like-minded ideologies. Rozalén was interviewed in many occasions and she performed numerous times in some local and regional televisions as well as in some radio stations. She had the privilege of performing in scenaries such as the 'Teatro Romea' and the 'Auditorio Víctor Villegas' in Murcia (two scenaries well-konwn in Spain and two of the most important in Spain) and the 'Teatro Circo' in Albacete (an historical theater declared '[Bien de Interés Cultural]', a category of the heritage register in Spain).

Rozalén studied Psychology in the University of Murcia and she got a master in Music Therapy[1]. In addition, she is experienced in Music Therapy for people who suffer from Parkinson and groups at risk of social exclusion. She is accompanied in all her concerts by Beatriz Romero (a specialised technician in interpreting sing language and interpreting blind and deaf people). Thus, they have created a show that has a lot of success in all the places where it is played. In the show, there is a mixture of both, hearing and deaf people, and it is prepared to be undestood in other countries through the use of the specific sign language connotations of each country. One example of this great work can be reflected in the music video of her single 80 veces[2].

She has worked with NGOs and associations such us Plan Internacional[3], Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer or Fundación Vicente Ferrer[4].

Career[edit]

2013: First record and the beginning of her success[edit]

After several years performing in small halls in la Mancha, in 2012 Rozalén left Albacete and she settled in the neightbourhood of Lavapiés, in Madrid. Once there, she sign up for a master in Music Therapy and met the producer Ismael Guijarro. Rozalén presented 30 of her compositions to Ismael who suggested her to record an album. Thanks to the producer's help and to a bank loan, Rozalén signed for Sony Music global music company and she became part of the most important Spanish talent agencies RLM (in which artists such as Malú, Alejandro Sanz, Miguel Bosé or Rapahel take part in) and in 2013 she published Con derecho a... her first studio album[5].

The song 80 veces became the first single of the album. For this song she recorded an orginal videoclip with Beatriz Romero that would triumph on YouTube with more that one million visits days after its publication. The second single of thealbul was Comiéndote a besos, a song dedicated to people in serostatus stage that overcame the overwhelming succes of 80 veces.

In September 2013 she began the tour promoting her first album. Rozalén achieved a great success and the tickets were all sold in almost all her concerts around the main theaters and halls of Spain. This success lead the composer from la Mancha to cross the pond and take her music to countries such as Argentina or Uruguay. At the end of the year she was awarded in the Dial Awards as one of the Spanish artists of the year.

In December 2014 Rozalén obtained her first Gold Record after exceeding 20,000 copies sold with her debut album Con derecho a. In addition, she won the Los Números 1 de Cadena 100 award, given by a radio station called Cadena 100 to the Spanish artists with the best songs of the year.

At the beginning of 2015 Rozalén was chosen to give voice to the soundtrack of Perdiendo el Norte, a film by Nacho G, Velilla. The singer composed the song Berlín, which is included in her second studio album[6].
