The Everything is a short film written and directed by Humberto Leon, released as part of the promotional campaign for Kenzo Paris's Fall-Winter 2018 collection. Starring Milla Jovovich as the matriarch to a mismatched family of young characters with unusual powers, the film features Kenzo's 'La Collection Memento No3' collection throughout and arises as Leon's directorial debut in partnership with Carol Lim. The fashion film premiered on Kenzo's main website in September 2018 and was met with masses of appreciation for both it's originality and quality film production.

Plot

[edit]

The film opens with a shot of Georgie (Milla Jovovich) sleeping in bed as her family surrounds her, everyone is sombre and most on the verge of tears. Rose (Alexandra Shipp) stands at the end of the bed, frustrated and holding back her tears. Unable to cope she rushes out of the room and runs down the street, bursting into tears as the music builds to a climax.

It cuts to a past Rose running down the same street but this time she is overjoyed. She arrives at a shoe store and joins the queue for the release of 'Sonics', highly sought after sneakers that are being released. A staff member greets the line and explains how they will proceed, emphasising the fact their stock is limited before opening the doors. The couple in front of Rose take their turn and purchase their shoes, deciding to wear them straight away and exiting the shop. Rose eyes their shoes longingly before taking her turn and requesting a size 6, only to be told they are all sold out and leaving empty handed. Eery music plays as Rose heads home, closely following the couple from the shop and eyeing their 'Sonics' in contemplation. Suddenly she snaps her fingers, swapping a pair of their shoes with her own and rushing home, leaving the couple in a state of complete confusion.

At home Shelly (Sasha Frolova) is sat at her bedroom dressing table as Mimi (Regina Hall) styles her hair for the school dance that evening. They discuss Shelly's powers and, while Mimi is encouraging, Shelly insists she doesn't want to use her powers out of fear of not fitting in. Rose arrives home, entering the kitchen and greeting Georgie by her name who insists that she be referred to as 'mom'. Georgie questions how Rose got the new 'Sonics' on her feet but Rose remains nonchalant and lies that she bought them herself, pushing Georgie to remind Rose that she has set rules about the children using their powers. Back in the bedroom Shelly asks Mimi for advice on how to tell if someone likes you and Mimi jokes that the best method is dancing since no one can lie when they're dancing. Bobby (Kodi Smit-McPhee), another of the children, enters and is immediately drawn to a magazine of hairstyles, soon followed by Rose who begins taunting him. Everyone tells her to stop it as Bobby asks if he can keep the magazine, rushing out of the room with it. Rose moves her taunting to Shelly, using her powers to change her shoes into various ridiculous styles and pushing Shelly into using her own powers. She transforms Rose's nails and they grow long enough to wrap around her head, leaving her powerless and causing her to run out of the room screaming. Bobby enters another bedroom in the house, Georgie's partner Steven's (Jay Ellis), and apprehensively reveals a project he has been working on in secret. He opens a notebook full of collaged hairstyles before disclosing his true secret; he has discovered his power. Nervously Bobby displays that he can actually change his hair to any one of these styles on command, impressing Steven who insists they show Georgie, only to be met with her disapproval. She instructs him to change his hair back and as he storms out she is moved to tears out of frustration, finding comfort in Steven as they take a seat on the sofa before leaving for the school dance.

They all arrive at the dance as Grimes' 'Oblivion' plays; Georgie joins the other chaperones while Rose and Shelly split up, heading straight for the dance floor. Shelly searches for Frankie (Ekaterina Samsonov), the girl she is interested in, and upon finding her asks if she wants to come to the bathroom. Hand in hand they run down the corridor, dancing and talking until Shelly stops them outside a classroom, explaining she wants to show Frankie something. Discreetly she unlocks the door by turning her fingernail into a key shape and lets them inside. She tries to use Mimi's flirting tips and they grow closer until suddenly Georgie interrupts to tell them the homecoming queen is being announced.

As the principal takes the stage to make his speech, the same couple from the 'Sonics' sale are seen on the dance floor. They approach Bobby at the bleachers and call him a freak. Rose interrupts to defend him only for them to call Rose and her entire family freaks aswell. Bobby loses control and leaps out of his seat, using his powers to change the bully's hair into an overgrown bob that cuts off his vision. Rose joins in and changes his shoes to heels he is incapable of standing in followed by Shelly who transforms his nails into coils that twine his hands together. Georgie realises what is happening and storms over, stamping her foot and putting the entire room to sleep. Once again she reminds them of the rules then tells them no one will remember what has happened before falling unconscious.

Once again we are shown the film's opening scene of Georgie unconscious on her bed, surrounded by her family. Rose returns from her running and sits with Mimi on the stairs who tells her Georgie brought them together so that they could support each other and that they are her 'everything'. They reenter the bedroom and Rose affectionately uses her powers to put comfortable socks on Georgie's feet. Slowly Georgie opens her eyes and smiles softly at her family.

Background and production

[edit]

The bulk of the script was written during Leon's commute on a plan and once it all came together it 'felt nothing close to an advertisement'.[1] It was shot in his own hometown high school and actually featured his mother, Wendy Leon, in both the film and promotional photography.[2]Though he found the task of directing his first film highly intimidating he was supported throughout the process by his crew, including those such as Natasha Lyonne and Spike Jonze plus having help from the whole cast who each played a role in 'shaping the film'.[3] Launching the entire project with the idea of making a film for the collection, Leon and Carol Lim took inspiration from the 80s films of their childhoods such as 'Beaches'.[4]

Humberto Leon first debuted his film at New York Fashion Week in September 2018 [5]
