Enid Caldicott, MBE (17 July 1899 - 21 May 1978) was the Librarian at the Architectural Association (AA) from 1928 to 1963[1]. She studied at the AA from 1922 to 1926 and passed the Intermediate Examination followed by work in an architect's office as an improver. She worked with Hope Bagenal, the acoustic engineer, who was consulting Librarian at the AA from 1919.

Early life

Enid Caldicott was born in Chobham, Surrey. After studying at the AA, she was appointed Organizing Librarian in April 1928. She oversaw the expansion of the Library including new collections added with the establishment of the Department of Tropical Architecture in 1956 and an expanded technical section in 1958. Her colleagues at the AA included Marjorie Morrison, Slide Librarian, and Rachel Morrison, Assistant Librarian. From 1931 her role as Librarian included acting as Lady Warden for the female students. She led the AA Student Excursion to Sweden, in 1946, with Serge Kadleigh.

Works

She designed a house, Longacres, Chobham, Surrey, in 1934, under the name "Forbes & Tate & Enid Caldicott". It was demolished c2004.[2]

Later life

Enid Caldicott presented books to the AA Library throughout her time. She was awarded the MBE in February 1964[3]. An AA Enid Caldicott Bursary was set up after her death.
